The House passed a four year omnibus farm bill after three days of debate and sent it to the Senate. Supporters say it raises farm income and cuts government costs. opponents argue it costs taxpayers about 18 billion dollars. The roll call was 221 to 172.
Stormy weather and a lightning surge scrubbed the Gemini 5 launch at Cape Kennedy. A new attempt was scheduled for Saturday at 9 a.m. EST, with concerns about a cableway fire possibly affecting plans. Astronauts Gordon Cooper Jr. and Charles Conrad Jr. waited in the capsule as fueling trouble and bad weather halted the countdown.
Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower rejected claims of a rift with President Johnson on Vietnam as “all rot.” He told House GOP leader Gerald Ford and party donors that he has supported Johnson’s Vietnam policies fully and has done everything to show backing.
About 600 inmates refused to leave their compound for work at Louisiana State Prison Angola after a guard shot a inmate the night before. Wingate White, head of state institutions, said talks would occur only under duress and noted no serious injuries among prisoners.
U S Marines estimate over 600 Viet Cong dead in the Van Tuong peninsula fight as Maj Gen Lewis Walt says the air sea assault was very successful. Meanwhile Viet Cong detachments disrupt Dak Sur and Vinh Hoa with American casualties noted.
Harrisburg AP report on House Democrats moving a reapportionment bill toward a final showdown next week. Republicans call it gerrymandering and fault limited review time. Court deadlines force a Sept. 1 self-reapportionment by both chambers.
Gov. Scranton criticized the House reapportionment bill saying it was written in a super political atmosphere to guarantee a Democratic controlled chamber for 10 years. He urged bipartisanship and warned the result could be decided by the courts. He also previewed more out of state party advocacy and commented on Specter’s magistrate probe.
AP dispatch reports the destruction of U S Marine Supply Column 21 in a heavy engagement on Van Tuong peninsula in South Viet Nam. The 287 ton column of amtraks and tanks was wiped out. casualties included several dead and wounded Marines amid explosions and battlefield chaos.
Thirty five Somers et firefighters battled a blaze at the Somerset Pine Grill 800 N Center Ave. The fire may have started from stove grease in the kitchen and spread to the second floor. A bedroom and kitchen were heavily damaged and the dining room suffered smoke damage with losses in the thousands. The fire crew fought from 11 36 a.m. to 1 30 p.m.
Somerset County Republicans protest a plan to split the county into the 73rd and 74th Pennsylvania House districts, with Somerset in one and Bedford County in the other. A 7:30 p.m. meeting of the Somerset County Republican Committee is set for Courtroom 1 to discuss the reapportionment amid calls and criticism.
The Senate passed a 1.65 billion antipoverty bill by 61 to 29 after four days of debate. Republicans faulted the program for abuse and waste but failed to curb it. The measure returns to the House which approved 1.9 billion last year. A 150 million jobs provision for chronically unemployed adults was kept. Senators Nelson and allies push conservation and development projects while governors retain veto power over key antipoverty programs.
