Old Trail Rider Dies in Tyrone
Tyrone, Aug. 19. Col. Millard Brownlee, 91, longtime Pennsylvania trail rider who tracked Indians after the 1877 Custer massacre, died at his Tyrone home after a short illness. A native Pennsylvanian, he spent much of his early career in the West and witnessed the golden spike ceremony joining eastern and western railroads in Colorado. Brownlee served from 1900 to 1916 in a cavalry troop of the old National Guard, reenlisting in 1916 for Mexican border service after being deemed over age, serving with the Fifth Sixth and Eighth Cavalry in the wars with western Indians and counting Buffalo Bill Cody as an intimate friend.
