Continuous rain on opening day at Meyersdale fair postponed the 11 am kid’s parade and pony races. Despite the storm, attendees explored farm produce displays, art, crafts, and booths from local businesses and organizations, including a standout rhododendron and hemlock setup by Meyersdale Sportsmen and a large photography exhibit by Luke Swank of Johnstown.

Slate Fall Injures Miner At Shannonberg Mines
Friedens miner James Koontz twenty five of Friedens RD 1 was crushed by a slate fall in Shannonberg Coal company mines near Ankeny. He sustained a fractured back multiple vertebrae and internal injuries and was taken to Somerset Community hospital in serious condition after being extricated by co workers.

Eight Die In Panair Do Brasil Plane Crash
SAO PAULO Brazil Aug 19 Eight persons were killed two seriously injured and three slightly injured in a Panair do Brasil liner crash on a mountain peak 15 miles south of here. North Americans aboard were Prof Philip C Jessup of New York and Hugh Davies of Harrisburg both with steward David Novak who survived with minor injuries. Novak said the trio spent an hour trying to free others before giving up. Rescue teams reached the scene at dusk and found two more seriously hurt among the ten aboard.

Stempfer Dies From Injuries In Somerset Crash
Paul Stempfer a 39 year old Jeannette miner died from injuries after his car overturned six to seven times on Route 31 west of Somerset Saturday evening. The accident occurred during descent of a grade near the county line. He was unmarried and the death is the 28th highway fatality in the first seven and a half months of 1941.

In BLACK LICK on August 19 Kenneth M. Sullinger 25 a lumberman shot and killed his 19 year old bride of under two months then killed himself. Coroner Edward L Fleming said the shooting happened in front of Milton Hancock’s home where Mrs Mabel Hancock Sullinger sat on the steps with a cousin Anna Hancock 17. The couple’s dispute over returning to his father’s home led to the fatal double tragedy as he pulled a gun from his shirt and fired.

British Sub Lost 28th Cachalot Acknowledged Overdue

Latrobe reporter Charle H. McLaughlin longtime Peenes ant of the former Peoples Bank died at his home after a seven week illness. He would have been 81 in November. His wife died 21 years ago. He is survived by four children. Funeral services will be held Friday.
