Fire Destroys Barn On Berkey Farm With $100000 Loss
A fast spreading fire gutted a large barn on the H L Berkey farm between Boswell and Somerset on Saturday afternoon. Fire chief William Flick said the blaze was out of control when Sipesville units arrived, with Acosta Friedens and Somerset joining in the battle. Seven thousand bales of hay and multiple farm vehicles and machinery were destroyed. The Friedens tank truck was damaged after being struck by a car en route to the scene. No livestock were in the barn, and the house nearby was spared. The fire is believed caused by defective wiring.

Somerset Borough police report two attempted robberies Friday night at about 9 p.m. A 13 year old girl was jumped on North Kimberly Avenue in front of Union Street School but escaped. Betty Houpt was also attacked nearby. both victims called for help. A light blue Chevrolet Corvair with Minnesota plates carried five occupants. Three of the group are juveniles. two men identified as John Erlitz and Donald Jenkins. Detainers filed in Bedford County on charges of attempted robbery by force and assault and battery. The group, linked to New Jersey Indiana New York City San Francisco Minnesota Michigan, allegedly traveled in a stolen car.
