Miss Mary Alice Griffith daughter of Prof and Mrs William E Griffith of Somerset has won a graduate assistantship in Brown university biology department Providence R I She holds a Hood college BA and will work on a genetics and immunology project sponsored by the Rockefeller foundation while attending Brown for her master’s degree expected in about 18 months She is a Somerset High School 1938 graduate.
A family dinner Sunday at the residence of Mr and Mrs Frank M Weimer on Prank Road celebrated the 81st birthday of Mr Weimer who was in good health and enjoyed gifts and family. Attendees included Prof and Mrs Lewis Warren and children Jane and Tom Monongahela City plus the Weimer families and friends.
The New Centerville Lutheran church hosts its annual Sunday school picnic on Saturday August 22 in the Gindlesperger grove north of New Centerville on Route 53. A program features music talks home talent acts including Rockwood high school barra and Rockwood male chorus with an address by Rev. Robert Nagle of Berlin in the afternoon and evening.
Mr and Mrs Arthur King of Gray recently celebrated their wedding anniversary and Mr Kings birthday. An enjoyable day was spent and luncheon served. Those present were Clyde King Mr and Mrs Daniel Spangler Vernon and Eddie all of Gray Mr and Mrs Frank King of Seanor Mr and Mrs Clarence King and Mrs Minnie King of Stoystown RD Mr and Mrs John Duppstadt Betty and William and Jacob Mock of Stoystown.
Mrs Herbert Jones of 118 South Rosina avenue has been employed by Kaufmanns of Pittsburgh as their Somerset shopping representative. She will assist locals with shopping needs and promises prompt service amid shortages of tires gasoline and telephone service.
Mrs Richard K Darr entertained the Quidnance club at her apartments Tuesday at eight. Evening hours were devoted to contract bridge followed by a coll ation.
Mrs Robert Hauger was guest of honor at a miscellaneous shower hosted by her aunt Miss Hester Ellenberger on South Kimberly avenue. About 25 guests attended and gifts were given before refreshments were served.
Pleasant Hill festival hosted by Pleasan Hill Evangelical Church on the church lawn Thursday evening. Hot and cold chicken sandwiches will be served.

Field Supervisor J. C. Meyers announced loans up to 400 dollars for seeding wheat and other winter grains and for livestock feed. Security is a first lien on crops or a chattel mortgage on livestock. Loans mature in August 1943. Applications may be filed with Robert Craver at 202 East Main Street or arranged with Meyers on Wednesday afternoon, September 2.
The Colors headquarters for the US Marine Corps recruiting in Pittsburgh reports Nelson G Golembeskey son of Mr and Mrs William Golembesky of Friedens has been accepted for service and assigned to Parris Island South Carolina for basic training. He was sworn in by Major A E Simon. Corporal Robert Hauger returns to Camp Lee Virginia after a four day furlough with wife Hazel Sheeler and parents. Pvt Kenneth Barchey son of Mr and Mrs George Barchey of Friedens transferred from Camp Lee Virginia to the Atlantic quartermaster motor base in Atlanta Georgia.

Sergeant Robert G. Lee of Columbus Ohio received the Soldier's Medal in a hospital ceremony for extraordinary heroism at Peru Massachusetts where an Army plane crashed killing 17. He saved two comrades by braving the flaming wreckage despite the danger of exploding fuel as Brigadier General Eldridge G. Chapman Jr. read the citation.

In Newark, August 18 the government traced its Bahr espionage case from a confidential State Department report as evidence in court. FBI agent Dillard testified Bahr denied any recruitment as courier or espionage agent while Swiss police arrest for illegal entry was noted. H L Speigle of Jerome pleads guilty to operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of intoxicating liquor. The plea was signed before District Attorney A M Matthews on Tuesday morning.
