Panuco Fire Destroys Ship and Pier in New York
Four men died and at least 55 injured as 3 570 ton Cuba Line cargo ship Panuco exploded and burned while docked in New York. The 875 foot pier was destroyed and damage unofficially put at 1.5 million dollars. Authorities probe sabotage as crews of 12 missing and nine believed killed on the pier. Fire began at 10 40 am and rapid flames forced crew and longshoremen into the bay as the ship drifted and was beached on the Red Hook Flats.
