Berlin Fair Tractor Tug Highlights Three-Day Event
Berlin’s 20th annual Community Fair moved into high gear with exhibit judging at the Berlin-Brothers valley joint high school building and a tractor pulling contest in the evening. Nearly a thousand attended as farmers and dealers vied in three classes with winners including Paul Hay and Jay Speicher. Judges and fair directors are named. Saddle Club Wins Honors in Connellsville Parade
The Somerset Saddle Club won first prize for the greatest number and beauty of saddle horses in the Sesqui centennial parade held in Connellsville on Friday. The Somerset Horse and Mule association took first prize for the most beautiful float in its division with Ruby Wills on the throne flanked by attendants. J Barclay won the grand prize for his float Old Fashioned Farm Dance. About 15 000 spectators attended the three hour parade despite the heat. Parade marshal Col. W John Stiteler Jr led the procession from Maple Ridge Farms at 6 30 am and the group returned to Somerset at sunset in high spirits.

Teen slayer ordered into Farview State Hospital
Milford August 17 James Van Why a 13 year old confessed slayer was committed to Farview State hospital for the criminally insane by Judge Fred W. Davis in Pike County court. The commitment follows a court appointed commission report finding him not sane and recommending hospitalization for criminal tendencies. He likely will be moved early next week avoiding September trial for the April 30 murder at Dingmans Ferry. If he recovers he must return to answer the charge.
