Berlin's liberal Montags Echo warns of a Communist fifth column in western Berlin aimed at purges of anti-Communists if western powers quit. It urges Western negotiators not to concede in Moscow and warns of wide repercussions across Europe.
British authorities said two Russian Yak fighter planes intercepted a British European Airways Viking en route to London. The jets reportedly approached within 100 feet before breaking away. The incident echoes a fatal Yak collision with a British transport plane in Berlin in April.
Cpl. John Capitan of Johnstown, killed in a B-29 bomber crash at Roswell New Mexico, Friday, was the brother of Emory Capitan of Garrett. The incident left thirteen dead and eight injured, with word reaching Garrett on Saturday.
George W. Davis 63, a prominent coal man in Somerset, died Monday evening after a heart attack Saturday. He led Diamond D Coal Co operations near Rockwood with L Harrington Gibbs and served as church and civic leader. Survived by wife Margaret, daughter Helen, son Harold, grandson Harold J. Davis II, and siblings. Funeral arrangements pending.
Harrisburg Aug 16 A legislative committee proposed sending juvenile delinquents to forest camps modeled on CCC setups to salvage and rehabilitate them. The plan, discussed by Sen Weldon B Heyburn chairing the joint state government commission, aims for 1949 legislative action and includes child guidance centers and expanded year round school recreation.
Borough Policeman David J. Metzgar suffered a cut and arm abrasions after his motorcycle skidded on a wet North Center Avenue street near the fire hall. Bystanders helped lift the bike off him. minor motorcycle damage reported.
U S Secretary for Air W Stuart Symington and Air Force Chief Gen Hoyt Vandenberg arrived in Istanbul for a brief visit. Eight year old Dorothy Stanko and her seven year old brother Paul perished in a Renton house fire that swept from the kitchen into their bedroom. Their parents, Peter and Helen Stanko, were saved from the roof but seriously burned and hospitalized. Fire damage reached ten thousand dollars.
Eugene O'Shea and Wiley M. Brewer pleaded innocent to burglary charges in an Oil City township arraignment. A hearing was set for August 26 after their Saturday arrests in Titusville.
