Miner Johnson dies from car crash injuries
Walter Johnson a 57 year old miner from near Reading Mines died early Friday at Somerset Community hospital from injuries suffered when struck by a car Tuesday night on Route 53 near Kimmels Park. Coroner said internal injuries a compound fracture and shock. Arthur St Clair 27 of Stoystown was driving southbound. Johnson lived alone in a shack behind Kimmels Park and had reportedly been drinking heavily prior to the accident. He was taken to the hospital after the 9:30 PM collision and died at 4:30 AM. Burial to be in a pauper’s plot at Somerset County home with no known relatives nearby. He was a native of Italy, possibly with a wife there and a son in America. This was the 27th highway fatality in Somerset County this year.
