Washington officials bridged a blowup in airline strike talks as a settlement effort continued ahead of House action on a halt to the 37 day work stoppage.
President Johnson voices frustration over Viet Nam peace talks, home strikes, and rising living costs. He cites inflation worries, labor strife, and a looming budget overrun while urging restraint and judging wage increases against productivity. He emphasizes no magic wand to fix all problems.
Conemaugh Township School District was paid 2368.50 in state funds by the State Department of Public Instruction as partial reimbursement for equipment in a vocational technical education course. The equipment supports the district’s business education program covering typing bookkeeping and office practice.

President Johnson told reporters at the LBJ Ranch that a Communist takeover of South Vietnam is now impossible as long as U.S. and allied troops stay in the field. Gen. Westmoreland estimated North Vietnamese regulars and Viet Cong forces total about 280000, with 110000 North Vietnamese regulars, 112000 guerrillas, 40000 political cadre, and 20000 support troops. Westmoreland warned more troops may be needed by year’s end.
Associated Press report details a U S infantry company pinned in a flooded rice paddy near Phu Loi South Viet Nam. Marines aided by air strikes tried to evacuee wounded as Viet Cong fired from all sides.
Laurel Highlands 1967 Miss America Regional Pageant Committee formed at Mt View Inn Greensburg to stage a late April regional elimination for 1967 Miss America. Miss Pennsylvania 1966 Gale Rothwell of Philadelphia will attend and seek national crown in Atlantic City. Eligibility targets local high school graduates 18 to 28.
The Defense Department asks NASA to study an earth orbital light reflecting system for night operations. Project Able envisions a satellite at 22,300 miles altitude with a large reflector to illuminate Viet Nam and other areas, potentially guiding sunlit beams to target zones.
Dr. L. H. Bull State Secretary of Agriculture will attend the Somerset County Fair Meyersdale on Thursday August 25. He will visit farmers and agri business leaders for an hour two before noon and use the mobile milk display unit August 25 26 and 27. He'll attend a luncheon at White House Restaurant Meyersdale at 12 noon meeting the Mayor and Somerset officials.
