Senate judiciary committee recommended confirmation 9 to 2 for Attorney General Tom Clark as associate justice before a full Senate vote expected Monday. Ferguson and Donnell opposed. McGrath nominated to succeed Clark as attorney general. Clark, 49, from Dallas, has long served in Truman administration since 1945 and is known for his folksy charm.
A group of 24 Confluence women met at Mrs R H Weaver’s home to form the Women’s Civic Club of Confluence. The June meeting planned the charter presentation at J and H restaurant on August 25 and aims include electing a woman school director.
Harrisburg reports a federal state roadbuilding plan could extend 35.5 miles of Pennsylvania farm to market highways with 35 projects awaiting final details. The $1 million federal grant requires township matching funds and covers Adams to York counties. The Frantz Distillery near Berlin will store about 35 000 bushels of wheat under commodity credit corporation programs as Somerset county leaders describe available loans. Farmers may store on farm or in warehouses, or use purchase orders to lock current prices. Loan terms run through April 30, 1950 with government payoff.
Somerset county officials and state aeronautics officials agreed to share about 16 000 dollars in new funds for four airport projects with 25 percent from the state, 25 percent from the county and 50 percent from the federal government.
President Truman names Gen Joseph Lawton Collins to succeed Gen Omar N. Bradley as chief of staff of the Army. Collins, a World War II veteran, led the 7th Army Corps from Utah Beach through Normandy and across Germany to the Elbe, and had been vice chief of staff. Bradley was named chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
Vice President Alben W. Barkley speaks at Altoona centennial listening to stories of a bell gift and marriage rumors. He notes U.S. aid to others and the need to defend democracy, stressing religious freedom and separation of church and state as Altoona marks a century of progress.
Washington announces that the three western zones of Berlin become eligible for Marshall Plan aid. John J. McCloy, U.S. high commissioner for Germany, said the move clarifies the West Berlin economy and that direct allocations would soon be announced, as Western Berlin remains outside western Germany.

About 10,000 troops start leaving, with the 112th infantry units departing first and 110 units rolling home by noon tomorrow.

Al Shean a cheerful comedian who helped turn a simple song couplet into a famous vaudeville trademark in the early 1920s died today at age 81 in New York. His partner in life and stage co starred in the duo knew as the vaudeville team. His death closes a long career that linked music and comedy in American entertainment.
