The Nixon administration and Congress seek to curb rural migration by improving rural life and share of prosperity. Plans include revenue sharing and more jobs and services in towns with 50 000 or fewer residents, plus housing, transport, education, health care, and credit measures.
Thirty-nine Somerset County 4-H members competed with 1,200 youths at Pennsylvania State 4-H Days on the Penn State campus August 9 to 11 in judging demonstrations public speaking and consumer education. Winners include senior livestock judging team placing 10th with Myrtle Barron first team member in white ribbon and Nancy Welsh red ribbon. individual and team ribbons awarded across multiple demonstrations and projects.

Somerset native Eugene S Rhoads will receive the Silver Wings meritorious achievement award at the 13th annual convention in San Jose California August 19 to 21. Rhoads was part of the NC 4 flying boat crew that crossed the Atlantic in 1919 and has over five decades in aviation. The award will be presented by Russ Brinkley founder of Silver Wings.

House approves bill to boost maximum unemployment payments from 60 to 81 weekly with additional dependent allowances totaling up to 11 extra per week. The measure, approved 128 to 67, projects rising program costs through 1972 73 and later.
