Secretary R. Melvin Laird released a 193 page study accusing Senator George McGovern of spreading mythology about defense spending. He argued Americans reject a $30 billion cut and prefer facts in national security.
Michael Montbriand, No. 2 at the Pennsylvania Housing Agency and former Sacramento official, resigned after questions about his background. Boss Harry Zollinger, hired Montbriand in Pennsylvania, faces scrutiny over Sacramento leadership. Agency has 110 loans, $2 million appropriated, awaiting expanded powers.
A single vehicle crash on the turnpike five miles west of the Somerset Interchange sent four people to Somerset Community Hospital for checks. Rosa Lee Hull 52 of Gaithersburg Maryland drove the car with passengers Phillip 10 Leatrice 8 and Faker Churn 53 all of Washington DC. No visible injuries were reported. The car went out of control in the passing lane and struck the medial barriers. the vehicle was a total loss.
U S Department of Agriculture predicts the Soviet Union may buy 250 million to 400 million bushels of U S wheat this year. Wheat growers and brokers greet the forecast with optimism noting potential price effects and the move toward freer markets.
Franklin M. McCorkel, Republican candidate for State Auditor General, accused incumbent Robert P. Casey of failing to understand his job during a Thursday startup tour that highlighted his plan to audit and possibly dismantle overlapping bureaus. McCorkel cited cost issues, promised regular financial reports, and emphasized independence from the current administration. He noted Democrat discontent with the administration and outlined a grassroots schedule including a Somerset luncheon and multiple county visits.
The Republican candidate for state auditor general told a Somerset luncheon the party needs a people centered image. Franklin McCorker of Lancaster County urged streamlining government and questioned the Department of Revenue while emphasizing fiscal reform and accountability to voters.

District Magistrate Constant N. Ferre of Boswell is temporarily assigned by Judge Charles H. Coffroth to fill in for District Magistrate Flwood K. Dively of Somerset. The term ends August 15 while Dively attends a magistrate's meeting in Harrisburg.
The House defeated a proposed mandate to withdraw U.S. forces from Indochina by October 1 in exchange for prisoners and a ceasefire. President Nixon won as the 228 to 178 vote blocked the measure, with supporters and opponents arguing over its potential impact on war policy and public sentiment.
Sixty youths from Somerset County participate in the Neighborhood Youth Corps at Somerset State Hospital and Mt. Davis in the southern county. Operated by YMDCA under John Mitchell, with support from the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare and funded by the U S Department of Labor. Participants from public assistance homes work 32 hours weekly at $1.60 an hour, in 34 young men and women ages 16 to 18.
Saigon AP reports the last U S infantry unit, the 3rd Battalion 21st Infantry, is departing Da Nang marking the end of American ground combat in Vietnam after more than seven years. Only advisers logistics and air units remain as Nixon withdraws 39 000 troops by Sept 1.
Plans move forward for the Somerset County Plowing Contest at the Ruppel Beant farm on Garrett Road before the state event. Richard Fogle serves as contest chairman for the Somerset County Soil and Water Conservation District.
Dorothy Gindlesperger of Rockwood Route 1 a former schoolteacher and leader in the grange and 4 H and church work will be buried or honored at a Saturday service. A Shippensburg graduate she taught in Milford and Middlecreek townships and mentored in Rockwood Area Schools. She served as secretary for Somerset County Pomona Grange and led the Milk Shakers 4 11 Dairy Club in her 5th year. The Milford Grange planned a picnic at her Gindlesperger Grove before her son William found her collapsed from a likely stroke.
