Pennsylvania Democrats held a private Harrisburg session to discuss campaign strategy restricting news access. Gov Shapp aides and McGovern figures attended briefly, while topics included tax relief and sales tax reductions amid national campaign tensions.
Thirty-one Somerset County 4 H members competed at Pennsylvania State 4 H Days at Penn State. Local winners announced by Leland G Jinks include dairy judging 25th of 41 teams and senior livestock 11th of 26, with several individual placings and blue or red ribbons in demonstrations and contests.

Dr. Milton Moffett Brooke, 91, longtime Somerset County resident, died Wednesday after years of public service. He studied dentistry and vocal arts in Vienna and New York, aspired to be an opera singer, then settled in Confluence as postmaster for 15 years. He organized the Somerset County Postal Employees Organization and served on the Confluence council and school board.
The Senate passed a bill banning sale of easily concealable handguns by 68 to 25. It targets small cheap pistols known as Saturday night specials and aims to remove about one million such guns from the market, though existing private holdings remain unaffected. The measure now moves to the House after three days of debate and a key amendment was defeated 70 to 27.
