Somerset State Hospital business manager James Bailey says meat shortages have not yet caused drastic menu changes at the Somerset area institution. The hospital’s farm supplies about 79 percent of beef needs, with potential to cover all if shortages worsen, though rebuilding the herd will take time.
A Pennsylvania meat dealer filed a federal class action in Philadelphia arguing the beef price ceiling is unconstitutional. Labron K. Shuman of Salzburg's Meats, Inc. seeks a three judge panel to void President Nixon's beef price freeze to Sept. 12, naming George P. Shultz as defendant. The suit claims the price control violates equal protection and hampers access to beef due to tied ceilings on raw materials.
The suit argues the order unreasonably differentiates beef from other red meats by keeping the ceiling on beef while raising it for others. Somerset Community Hospital reports two to three weeks of beef on hand but says Armour Co and R&B Co have no steaks or roasts currently. Officials at the County Home for the Aged and jail report no supply problems or menu changes at this time.
U S Rep John P Saylor says the Coleman Somerset plant may cease operations due to unfavorable wage and price controls. Coleman executives report seeking a price increase on campers to cover inflationary losses and defend investment returns. The Somerset plant employs about 450 and is the area’s largest employer.
U S warplanes blasted suspected Communist insurgent positions near Phnom Penh airport as part of a high level strike in Cambodia. A federal appeals court reversed a lower court order to halt bombing, citing strategic aims to disrupt infiltrators and troop build ups around the capital.
