The son had been intermittently confined to a sanitarium for over three years and their custody battle followed a 15 year-old divorce fight with Henry Nicholas Loney, known as the goldfish king of the Orient, who had provided a $68 000 fund and monthly support for the boy. Phillip, described as brilliant, had attended the universities of Chicago and California and studied in Spain.
