At Panmunjom on August 7 the Communists handed over 100 allied prisoners in 24 minutes. The group included 25 Americans and 25 British amid a larger promise of 400 POWs. The Americans and British appeared in good shape and greeted reporters as they were moved from the north.
Lt Col Howard R Boose Jr of 896 Tayman Ave Somerset will leave August 20 from Camp Kilmer N J for Ankara Turkey to join the Joint American Military mission for aid to Turkey and advise on American war techniques His wife and three children will remain in Somerset until he can join them likely within six months to a year He has attended Gettysburg College and Ohio State and served in the Philippine Islands Japan and California language school prior to this assignment
Freedom Village Korea August 76 reports POW accounts of torture and starvation after Panmunjom exchanges. Lt Col Harrison recalls nine days of starvation and torture, while Lt Massinberg describes four days of torture and frostbite from North Korean guards.

The 24th Camp Meeting at Edgewood Grove closes its tenth and final day marking 21 years of annual gatherings. Reports show Pennsylvania Church of God gains in youth work, tithes and converts with 257 new members. The event includes sermons by Rev. J E Bell and Rev. Mr. Chesser, committee awards, and plans for next year including a new wing and youth camp.
Berlin reports a fresh clash over food aid as 60 000 from five Russian occupied provinces and 70 000 from East Berlin breach the western food blockade. Desertions hit a daily high while Otto Nitschke denounces U S terms and defends Soviet era relief.
The RB36 bomber carrying 14 missing airmen remains unaccounted after crashing near 500 miles south of Iceland and 300 to 500 miles west of Ireland. Four survivors were plucked from the icy sea and brought toward British ports as searchers from 25 U S and British planes combed a 200 mile area through foul weather. Survivors include Maj. George B. Parkes, 37, navigator. Airman 1 C Harold E Parker, 22, gunner. Set Charles M DeHaven, 24, crew chief.
Gen Mark W Clark told reporters at the Pentagon that if the Korean truce is violated he would favor using any and every weapon in the US arsenal. He did not specify atomic arms but implied potential use. Clark plans to retire as supreme allied commander in the Far East and return to Tokyo to wrap up duty before October.
Meyersdale borough council approved transferring 2000 from the sewer fund to the general fund. A Meyersdale Manufacturing plant official complained surface water enters the plant basement and the gas meter near the plant is a hazard. the council will investigate. Parking rules on Route 219 between Dale and Clay streets shift to the playground side. next meeting is Tuesday September 1.

Police chase leads at the Pennsylvania turnpike killings of two truckers as a hooded assailant followed a driver from Delaware to Aberdee n Maryland. A Meyersdale man reports being shot at near Harmarville while another slaying prompts New Jersey investigators to check a bullet linked to the case.
Harrisburg reports Gov. John S. Fine issued extradition requisitions to return Frank Kemp and Mrs. Jane Albright from West Virginia. They escaped from Somerset county jail with larceny charges and were held at Moundsville. The indictment states they fled while under arrest and seized money and clothing to aid the escape.
Betsy Woodhouse, 14, of Milroy was fatally wounded by a 22 caliber bullet in her father Dr. S Lawrence Woodhouse Jr. office. The unconscious doctor, 55, was found beside her with a sleeping pill box and rifle nearby. He was treated at Lewistown hospital. Betsy would have entered junior year at Margh-Brown sign school in Milroy.
Round and square dancing event set for Friday August 7 at the Ursina American Legion Hall featuring communal music and dancing in a local social gathering format.
Secretary of State Dulles met with President Rhee in Seoul to discuss post armistice Korea and a security pact as unification talks and economic aid were reviewed. Eisenhower, in a nationwide radio address, warned of continuing trials and hazards ahead and touted progress on Korea, foreign aid, and world peace.
A Langley Air Force crash boat rescued 30 men and boys from a Canton Ohio father son group aboard the two masted schooner Anna Helen after a storm near Wolf Trap light in Chesapeake Bay. The crew transferred the soaked group to the rescue boat and delivered them to the Langley base then to the Newport News YMCA.
