KEARNEY N J Aug 7 P CIO workers at Federal Shipbuilding and Dry Dock yards halted a strike that threatened 493 000 000 in naval and merchant ship orders and left 16 000 idle. Local 16 leaders said most of the midnight shift 1 000 strikers went home or were turned back by the strike committee while maintenance men and guards entered. Union officials claimed the strike aimed to force adoption of the defense board recommendations including a modified union shop and a 12 percent wage rise, with reclassification of 1 500 workers unsettled. Company president Korndorff said the work stoppage breaches a June 23 agreement and harms national defense. The company insists on no closed shop and maintains wages are the highest in the industry.
Floyd Burke president of the Amalgamated Clothing Workers association facing a surety of the peace arrest in Meyersdale after allegedly threatening two workers and damaging a car. He posted $900 bond for a preliminary hearing set by Squire Whipperman and had a prior disorderly conduct arrest with a $16.20 fine.
Westmoreland County grand jury freed George W. Chadwick aged 60 on murder charges from a gun battle that killed his son and daughter in law on their 16th wedding anniversary. Coroner H A McMurray reported the June 24 shooting in Greensburg. Russell Chadwick, 36, threatened his wife Romayne, 32, and Chadwick's father intervened. The elder Chadwick was wounded and the couple left five children.
Pittsburgh bakers club announces an increase of one cent per loaf for bread, bringing the price to 11 cents. The hike will take effect next Monday in Pittsburgh and the 25 mile marketing district.
Berlin reports a series of triumphs with 895,000 Russian prisoners and massive losses. It cites breakthroughs south of the Pimsk marshes toward Kiev, toward Smolensk and toward Leningrad, and says the Stalin line has been breached as new operations begin.
In Finland on the Ladoga front, Lochner notes muddy Russian uniforms better suited to the terrain, Finns relying on forest warfare, and Russians viewed as formidable. He traveled along the Stalin line from Lake Ladoga toward southern Russia, observing camouflage, bunkers, and heavy fortifications.
RAF bombed Calais and Boulogne on the French coast and struck German shipping in the Channel as part of a round the clock western Europe offensive. The air ministry said 10 to 12 Messerschmitts were hit near Cherbourg and one Nazi fighter was shot down. Two escorting fighters fell. two RAF crews were injured and several German targets were attacked along with beached tankers.
Franklin reports Hal Kingsley 69 lost his left foot when a reaper blade severed it as his horses lunged forward after he jumped from the machine to move a sheaf of wheat.

Moscow’s Stal automotive works showed undiminished output after thirteen air raids, turning out a truck every twenty minutes.
The Daily Mail suggested a British landing party may have crossed the Channel to the Occupied French coast and blown up a German long range gun. Observers reported a crater on the coast and a blast with a Channel glow, while Saboteur or naval shelling theories circulated.

The government anti trust case against Masonite Celotex and eight affiliates over control of the $8,000,000 hard board industry was dismissed by Judge Alfred C. Coxe. The court found no violation of the Sherman or Clayton acts and decreed dismissal of the suit.
Har ol d Ickes the defense coordinator urged East Coast shoppers to carry their own purchases to cut gasoline use by delivery trucks. He asked stores to reduce deliveries whenever feasible during the wartime period.
In parallel warnings to Japan, Hull and Eden declare Thailand vital to U S and Britain, stressing defense of rubber tin and oil sources and potential impacts on Singapore and the Philippines. They refuse to rule out military action to stop Thai subjugation.
Foreign Secretary Anthony Eden told Parliament Britain had formally warned Japan that intervention in Thailand would worsen British Japanese relations. He said a Thailand move similar to French Indo China would threaten Singapore's security and noted the British ambassador had told Tokyo that authority figures seemed to be acting.
Western Pennsylvania sees fair, moderately warm conditions on Thursday with clear to partly cloudy skies. By Friday, increasing clouds and warmer temperatures spread over northwest and extreme north areas, with possible showers Friday afternoon or night. Eastern Pennsylvania remains fair with mild temperatures, while Maryland and West Virginia stay fair with continued moderate warmth and some cloudiness.
