Somerset hosts Old Fashioned Bargain Days with a 2 p.m. street ping pong ball drop from a helicopter. The event features performances by Hia Wa Pawn Chee and Tam O Shanter on the diamond and prizes numbered across 30 local firms.
Frank Sinatra vacationed on the Southern Breeze off Edgartown harbor while rumors swirled of a marriage to Mia Farrow. Farrow ashore for shopping with Claudette Colbert and Rosalind Russell as Sinatra kept to himself aboard the 168 foot yacht with no confirmation of a wedding.
Dr Martin Luther King Jr urged self government for Washington DC during a White House visit with President Johnson and led an evening march to honor his push for home rule. He spoke after a week in Northern cities with large Black populations as Congress faces a House delay on a Senate approved DC home rule bill.
An Allegheny County coroner's jury recommended that 16 year old John R. Banks be held for grand jury action on involuntary manslaughter in the July 26 traffic death of Katherine Hughes in McCandless Township. Hughes died at St Joseph's Emergency Center after Banks' rear impact on Route 19.
Gov Scranton accused the Democratic-run House of obstructionism delaying education and civil rights measures. He urged passage of the deprived children's act and a broad reform program while criticizing Philadelphia leadership influence. He also commented on the state dog bill and employment fairness, and planned talks on Philadelphia judgeships.

A refrigerator truck traveling south on N Edgewool Ave near Main St in Somerset collided with a tree limb. The truck bed peeled open spilling insulation. the cab struck another tree. Driver Robert J L Volk, 23, of Cumberland Maryland, sustained no injuries. Vehicle owner Sell and Co. Cumberland Md. reported $2500 damage.
The Senate Armed Services Committee approved a $1 billion pay increase for all services with major changes to the House plan. Officers and enlisted personnel with over two years’ service get flat raises of 6 percent and 11 percent respectively, while those with under two years see 2 figure boosts. The package also includes re enlistment bonuses up to $8,000 and two extra increases: combat pay rising from $55 to $65 monthly for zones like Vietnam and a 3 to 4 percent cost of living bump for retired personnel.
Federal Power Commission issued a two price system in the Permian Basin case aimed at spurring gas exploration while protecting consumers. A 16.5 cent ceiling applies to new gas well gas and 14.5 cents to all other gas with taxes included.

U S and South Vietnamese planes kept raids on Communist targets and reported losses from a Viet Cong attack near the Da Nang airbase. A new military command area was created to coordinate U S and Marine ground forces over a 40 mile South Viet Nam strip.
Two resolutions on Somerset County were acted upon in the Pennsylvania State Senate. One resolution directed study by the State Council of Higher Education on establishing a State College at Somerset and reporting findings to the Senate Education Committee. The other adopted resolution, co sponsored by Stroup Hawbaker Devlin and Jirolanio, urged surplus corn aid to drought areas and asked Congress for relief measures.
Former premier Papandreou met King Constantine in Athens and urged formation of a new government with early elections as the Center Union holds 170 of 300 seats. Athanasiadis Novas resigned after a no confidence vote, toppled by Parliament's upheaval.
