Morgenthau and Roosevelt pressed tax fixes as defense planning widens with a 700 million munitions plant program and 60 inland factories to shield from air attack.
Two Salisbury men were jailed after hearings before Justice of the Peace C. A. Maust. Charles Popovitch, 21, received 24 days for hunting without a license while Alfred Dishong, 56, faced 14 days for hunting rabbits during a closed season.

County tax sale results show about 675 properties listed. fewer scattered purchases left more than 80 percent of the properties to county commissioners. Total revenue was $3,700, barely covering sale costs, while 56 owners saved properties from sale. The sale was delayed from 9 to 10 am as D A Marteney conducted the auction and the process extended into Monday afternoon after a long preparatory period.
Somerset borough school board at its regular Monday session accepted the resignations of civics teacher and assistant coach Robert R. Yevak and third grade teacher Christine Laughery. Coroner Franklin P addison III announced the bodies of all victims in the $2,000,000 Hollingshead paint factory fire have been recovered. Seven bodies were recovered from debris and three others died in hospitals.
London reports Alfred Duff Cooper stating direct hits in all 23 raids on Hamburg since May 10 as part of 48 raids in 56 nights. Oil depots attacked 14 times, docks six, railways three, airdrome twice with fires seen up to 80 miles away. German denial challenged.
Duisburg reports that German officials allowed foreign correspondents to tour the Thyssen oil and steel complex after two bombs. They said one strike hit an open courtyard near tanks, another hit a laboratory not part of operation, and declared the plant unharmed.
Harry J. Hormell a former state legislator and roadside store owner faced federal charges after a raid on his Route 31 store and home near Somerset. Officers found 211 pints of beer on ice five and a half cases seized 26 empty cases and two quarts of whiskey. He posted a $500 bond for federal court in Pittsburgh after waiving hearing.
Ruins of Camden's 2 million fire yield three more bodies, bringing total recovered to six and the death toll to ten. Identified among the recovered are William P. Bennett, 64, plant engineer, who entered the plant during the blast, and Nathaniel Bank, 29, a Black worker. Three victims died in hospitals.
Michael F. Tighe, who for 17 years led the nation s first steel union that became the CIO steel workers organizing committee, died today in Pittsburgh after suffering a stroke March 1, nine days before his 82nd birthday.

British night air raids burn Sterkrade oil plants and a Krefeld hangar, while German raids along the Midlands and east England cause minimal damage.
London reports that Britain freed Satoru Makihara, London agent for Mitsubishi, the first of two high level Japanese detainees in an empire wide roundup. Eight other Japanese remain in custody as tensions with Japan rise. British officials cite insufficient evidence for further detention amid Japanese protests.</S>
Nineteen British warships reportedly departed Gibraltar today, heading toward the Mediterranean before turning back toward the Atlantic. La Linea reports say the 29,150-ton battleship Resolution was hit in an air-sea engagement south of Formentera, with a cruiser struck by a bomb and several British sailors killed or wounded. The damaged cruiser and the Resolution were said to remain at Gibraltar as the others moved away.
In Shanghai on August six a gunman killed Capt. Paul Yankovsky, director of Japanese affairs in the French concession police, a former czarist air force officer and French Foreign Legion veteran. He was the second White Russian slain in four days, following the shooting of Charles Metzler, leader of the White Russian community, in the American defense sector of the International Settlement amid tensions over a pro Japanese emigrants committee.
Thundering explosions and black smoke marked a raid on Gibraltar munitions dumps opposite Algeciras Spain. Warplanes crossed at 5 p.m. dropping bombs before any anti air fire could engage.
London dispatch says Julius Streicher, 55, former governor of Franconia and leading anti Jewish agitator, is dead. He sheltered with Hitler in Munich during the 1923 putsch and helped found Der Stuermer, inciting attacks on Jews and the razing of synagogues.
A 27-year-old American from Laredo Texas reported for duty to the Royal Air Force yesterday and engaged in an air battle over the French coast. His squadron shot down two Messerschmitt fighters while he chased two more, scored a hit on one, and landed safely with a bullet-scarred Spitfire. He said the fight was great fun and would not have missed it for all the Japs in China. The Texan had joined the RAF seven weeks after moving to Laredo.

Briston New Hampshire August 5 1944 four men died while descending a gas filled well to aid a companion. Martin Keuse 45 Gorham failed to surface prompting Forest H Martin 40 Bristol to descend followed by Earl R Well 22 and Verne A Tilton 45 Bristol. Firemen in gas masks found all four dead from gasoline fumes.
