President Johnson and Defense Chief McNamara asked Congress for an emergency fund and expanded military spending. They seek $1.7 billion in new money and 340,000 more troops to reach 2.98 million by next June, with 50,000 additional forces to Vietnam soon.
Somerset County Maple Festival expands to a two month schedule in 1966 after a board vote. The plan follows record crowds in 1964 and 1965 and aims to manage growing visitor numbers. The Maple Queen contest will open the festival on February 2 with contestants from county high schools and local groups.
In Harrisburg House Democrats fail to override Gov Scranton vetoes on 11.6 million in public assistance and library aid as Republicans stay united. O'Dell supports library aid. party lines prevail on most vetoes. Senate reports police staffing bill and a misprint in the clean streams measure.
Washington AP reports the Senate rejected a bid to overturn the Supreme Court ruling requiring state legislatures to have membership based on population in both houses. The motion by Republican minority leader Everett M. Dirksen failed by seven votes, not reaching the two thirds threshold.

The plan uses an eight region regional framework and regional priorities based on demographics and patient flow with an Advisory Council chaired by Arlin M. Adams to review annually.
Harrisburg report shows Somerset County hosts about 800 poultry farms, ranking 11th among Pennsylvania counties. Average production per farm is $2358 with 47,403,000 eggs produced from layers in 229,000 birds and a meat output of 1,947,900 pounds valued at $302,100.
