Two Greyhound buses collided head on on Highway 81 near Waco Texas early today prompting a grim death toll of at least 29 with many injured and some missing. Fire and exploding fuel turned the scene into a crematorium as investigators recovered charred remains and personal items from the wreckage. Drivers Malone and Herring perished, and servicemen and civilians alike were among the dead in the worst bus crash in national records.

Unemployment in Somerset County Rises Amid Steel Strike
Herbert L. Sann of the Pennsylvania State Employment Service notes a July increase in unemployment claims in Somerset. 397 new claims and 993 reopened claims, with a July weekly average of 2,250 due largely to coal layoffs from the steel strike. Active job seekers total 1,474, including 206 women and 225 veterans. 237 new applications, 52 aptitude tests, and 41 counseling sessions were recorded. The office placed 166 people in jobs in July, including 90 women and 20 veterans, with seven placed on local farms. Distribution of placements: four in construction, 69 in food and kindred products, 24 in apparel, 2 in lumber, 5 in other utilities, 23 in wholesale/retail trade, 6 in private services, and 26 in private households.

Father and Son Injured in 2 Car Collision
Paul Cramer age 34 of Friedens and his three year old son Robert Eugene were injured in a two car crash near Roof Garden Drive In Theater Route 219 two miles north of Somerset at 10 55 Monday night. Both admitted to Somerset Community hospital in fair condition Tuesday morning. Cramer suffered chest and skull injuries while his son has a shoulder injury. Roberts car driven by Mrs Pic Roberts Berlin R D 4 left the drive in moments before. No one in Roberts car seriously hurt. Damage to both cars about 1000 each.
