Joseph Yablonski and a companion are to appear in court to answer charges related to leading a riding incident at the jail precinct with organizers and officers bound for peace.
Hundreds of lumbermen and truckers in the Tri State area defied a surprise attack by CIO pickets and resumed transporting props and other cargo to western Pennsylvania Maryland and West Virginia. In Addison and Somerset County a mob damaged eight to ten trucks and two men were arrested for riotous destruction of property. The disturbance caused thousands of dollars in damage but did not halt convoy operations as officers prepared for grand jury action and bond hearings.
The Somerset American announces higher rates due to wartime press costs and defense advertising cuts. Carrier delivery nationwide and county mail rates rise effective Sept 1 1941 with two year prepayments allowed. Twice-a-Week price unchanged.
Joseph Yabolonski and Earl W. Bailey, CIO organizer and companion, were released on $2,000 peace bonds after a riotous lumber strike disturbance near Addison. The bonds require the defendants to refrain from disorder during the bond term as ordered by Judge Norman T. Booze.
William Rhodes 20 his wife Helen and grandfather Samuel Rhodes 72 all of Elizabeth were hospitalized after a rear end collision with a National Van Lines truck on the Pennsylvania turnpike near the Allegheny tunnel. Rhodes was charged with reckless driving. Car damage estimated 300 truck damage 200.
Two of three Rockwood youths charged in the state liquor store burglary were released Monday on bonds for their appearance at the next juvenile court term. Charles Mayhugh and Harry Hileman, both 16, were released under 1000 dollars each. Carl Dupont Jr., 18, remains in Somerset county jail in default of bond.
Merrill Duckworth 18 and Mildred Abshire 18 escaped injury when their car, a graduation gift from June, sideswiped another vehicle and hit a telephone pole and tree on a National highway detour near Addison. Major A Schultz and his wife, riding in the other car, were treated for cuts and bruises in Confluence. Evangeline Hag ER, 19, bride to be, and her sister June Rose Marie 9 rode with a brother Robert 14. Evangeline was en route to Hagerstown Maryland for her upcoming marriage to Sherman Smith.
At Meyersdale the shirt factory opened with 110 workers, ten more than before the weekend. About 50 strikers from the Amalgamated Clothing Workers association CIO affiliate protested outside, seeking union recognition. Fifteen strikers were arrested, including Floyd Burke, who was released after a hearing. thirteen bonded strikers await grand jury disposition on Monday.
A Fayette county court en banc adjourned a hearing on Mayor William J. Crow of Uniontown who seeks to keep his office while on active army duty. Crow filed quo warranto July 30 arguing state officials may not lose posts when inducted. Judge H S Dumbauld and two others heard the case with Senator Cavalcante representing Crow and City Solicitor Lane for acting Mayor George B. Smith.

Minister of War Castro Martinez announced an investigation into attempted subversive activities within the Colombian army. An undisclosed number of people were detained with reports a German could be among them, though authorities said no active soldiers were held. Sources cited Nazi involvement. The House of Representatives met in a closed session to learn details.
Edson B. Powell of Cairnbrook, recently elected supervising principal of Stoystown schools, will assume duties this month. He previously taught general science and biology at Shade Township High School for seven years and earned a 1934 Pitt degree plus a 1939 master of education. Powell is a member of state and national education associations.

Ward, 21, battled a four foot flame after a battle with a Messerschmitt, crawling from the wing to smother the fire and save the aircraft.
Chinese dispatches report 7000 Japanese soldiers routed Saturday northeast of Ichang in central China after a battle described as sizable. Japanese retreat ordered following failed bomber and artillery assault to break the Chinese attack.
Soviet forces repelled five German tank assaults near the Kiev region and fought to hold Smolensk while engaging Nazi columns in Estonia below Leningrad. The day saw heavy tank and aircraft action with Russian losses and German armor wiped out in multiple engagements.
