Apollo 15 astronauts Scott Irwin and Harrison Schmitt praised the lunar geology field trips as fantastically exploring the Hadley Rille walls and crystalline rock. Schmitt said the core sample could be mankind’s most valuable contribution, revealing solar radiation and magnetism history from millions to billions of years.
Apollo 15 astronauts David R. Scott James B. Irwin and Alfred M Worden completed a 19 hour moon surface stay in Hadley Region mapping terrain and collecting rocks while handling a pressure scare in the Falcon command module. Mission Control confirmed no leak and Falcon jettisoned safely.
The White House pressed Congress to accelerate Nixon’s domestic agenda including welfare reform and a national health plan. Clark MacGregor warned that a mid October adjournment could delay urgent bills, noting foreign policy debates have slowed progress. The draft extension bill and other major proposals remain a priority for action this week before recess.
Harrisburg AP reports the Pennsylvania House defeated by 80 to 117 a bill to provide public school districts an additional 115 million dollars for the 1971 72 fiscal year. The measure was seen as central to resolving the state budget and tax issues as leaders sought timely passage.
Pittsburgh AP reports steelmakers including Wheeling-Pittsburgh Inland Lukens Steel Co. raise prices about 8 percent to offset higher labor costs after signing a new three year contract with the United Steelworkers. Plants lay off workers as demand lags and orders dwindle amid the industry shift.
U S chief delegate George Bush convened friendly delegations in New York to plan strategy for seating the People's Republic of China at the United Nations while opposing expulsion of Nationalist China. Delegates discussed last year’s resolution requiring a two thirds vote for seat changes and the potential for Beijing to be recognized as sole Chinese representative.
The Senate moved a campaign cost curb bill with a five and five spending limit and a 20 percent leeway. Each party would be limited to about 8.3 million in 1972, with a responsive split between broadcast and print media. An 88-2 vote approved a six member independent commission to oversee enforcement and contributions reporting.
