Mr and Mrs James D Barron Sr hosted a Boswell lawn party for son James Jr turning 17. Guests enjoyed dancing games a cake walk with many attendees listed including Frances Lohr Maxine Barron Priscilla Goebert Madelyn Hanna and Doris Lape among others. Bullet refreshments were served.
Davidsville July 31 The Conemaugh Township High School cheerleaders announce postponement of the summer skating parties to August 9 and 23 due to conflicting events. The Indian cheerleaders sponsor the series at students' request to help cover costs for new uniforms.
At a special meeting on July 28 the Berlin Brothers Valley joint school board elected Miss Dorothy Jane Perry to fill the mathematics vacancy created by John Saylor's resignation. A Westminster College graduate from New Wilmington, she majored in mathematics and completed elementary education in Butler County. She graduated from Ligonier High School, where she stood first in her class. her home is in Ligonier.
Elmer Long aged 24 from Roselle died in Wilmington General Hospital from injuries after his motorcycle skidded on a road near Roselle. He was hospitalized today following the crash.
Fred Brubaker of Somerset wins a newly created Shade township school post in the commercial department after election by the Shade township school board. He is a Somerset Trust Co. employee and a graduate of Somerset High School and Shippensburg State Teachers College. The board also appoints Dr. Michael Hakuda of Windber as dental examiner for the year and sets the school year opening for September 2.
Thomas J. Cole of Holsopple celebrated his 82nd birthday at home. A retired coal miner who moved to Somerset county in 1902, he worked in the Haws mines and Maple Ridge Coal company. He is in good health, a Holsapple Fire company member, active in parades, and unmarried living alone.
Mrs. Alvin Shoemaker hosted the M. R. 8. club for dessert bridge at her East Church Street home at 1 39 p.m. Later at 6 30 p.m. the D. M. B. club gathered for dinner at the White Star hotel Jennertown followed by bridge with Mrs. Sydney Martin of Somerset R. D. 1 as hostess.
Rotary District Governor A. C. Manning will be the guest speaker at the Somerset club noon meeting today at the Ferner hotel.
Admissions include Sandra Phasey Eric and Dorothy Hauger both listed for surgical cases in Berlin with Elsie Hauger also under surgical care. Mr and Mrs Telford Coleman of Somerset are proud parents of a son. Discharges: Michael Kukuvka and baby Somerset, Jack Bird Somerset, Fred Zeigler Shanksville, Mrs Charles Sabin Confluence.
A Somerset area family of seven escaped unhurt when a lightning bolt struck a towering sugar maple in their Franklin Street yard, jumped to power lines to the house, and damaged radios, a transformer, fence chargers, fuses, bulbs, and a clock. Bees and weather note further farming quirks as the month nears August.

Other locals report travels including visits to Baltimore Roanoke Waterloo Philipsburg and Shenandoah Valley and a resident uncle’s visit with John A Peck of Pittsburgh staying with E D Peck.
The party from Pittsburgh will depart Friday for Westhampton Beach New York to visit Col. and Mrs. Willard Waderton and then travel to New England. Also leaving Friday are Mrs. Helen Dimm Mrs. Mary Kearns Miss Eleanor McElroy and Mrs. William Barbie for a week in Chautauqua New York.
The Casebeer Solid Sewing club met at Jane Sechler's home and agreed to hold another gathering before the roundup. The next meeting is set for August 12 at 7 30 p.m. at Phyllis Baer's home with songs and refreshments.
A Christian Leadership Workshop at Elizabethtown College ends today after a week of study. Over forty representatives of the Church of the Brethren from Pennsylvania participated in sessions led by ministers educators and media professionals focusing on five topics including peace education and music worship.
Bethlehem Steel chairman Eugene Grace said the steel industry can meet normal demand, with price hikes due to rising labor costs. He noted a 12 cent per hour pay boost offered to striking shipyard workers and explained car shortages limit shipments. Grace reported second quarter net income of 12.41 million and maintained a $1.50 dividend. Orders on hand stood at 375.0 million, with shipyard business at 63.0 million.
Athens July 31 Turkish ambassador to Paris Numan Menemencoglu urged forming a Mediterranean federation as the best defense against a strong Danubian Balkan coalition led by Russia. He told reporters that Russia has penetrated the Balkans and Danube regions by exploiting Communist ideals and Pan-Slavism.
In Other Days notes Walter S Hoffman of Weare has moved into a new brick building opposite the First Christian church on East Main. A cow on Route 53 caused $50 damage to a car after being struck. Clyde Schrock of Garrett was bruised when his sister Hilda Schrock’s car collided with F F Smith’s sedan on Route 53.

President Truman signed a $502 million flood control bill totaling $10.105 million for five Pennsylvania projects including the Conemaugh river reservoir Williamsport Sunbury Clair ion river reservoir and Punxsutawney The action complements a separate Rome vote ratifying an Italian treaty with 262 to 68 in the national assembly and 80 abstentions.
