Mr. and Mrs. Edgar L. Peck of North Edgewood avenue celebrated their twenty eighth wedding anniversary with a roast pig dinner and large anniversary cake. Mrs. Peck, formerly Ora Shirrah Berkley, and Mr. Peck, a Somerset borough constable, also guard on the Pennsylvania turnpike, received many gifts and a call from their son Robert with the signal corps at Fort Monroe Virginia.
A birthday surprise was held Saturday evening at W. W. Vought’s home near New Center ville with many gifts. Guests included Mr. and Mrs. William Foust and several families. Sunday dinner guests at the Foust home featured Pvt. and Mrs. Allen M. Foust and others. Allen Foust departed Sunday for a Tennessee camp.
Captain Cloyd B. Sayler of Somerset reports to Lockbourne army air base to train as a B 17 Flying Fortress pilot. He earned his wings November 9, 1942 and has served as a flying instructor at Shaw Field and Newport army air field. Also Pvt John C Heiple of Somerset has been promoted to private first class with construction engineers in New Guinea after 16 months in service.
Washington reports 121 of 129 beverage distillers prepared to resume liquor production at midnight, ending 22 months of wartime alcohol output to replenish the national hard liquor supply.
A large barn on Harold Glessner’s farm near Berlin was destroyed by lightning Friday night. Three barns on the Glessner farms were affected. 300 chickens, 35 pigs and a calf perished, along with hay, straw and grain. Wheat not yet stored, and much machinery damaged. Firefighters could not save the barn, with some insurance coverage noted.
The martins are in training for their southern trek, usually in early August. Birds perch at the County Trust corner on the diamond, with many residents noting their absence then return each morning with their young. The period ends soon as offspring depart, while grackles also prepare to go south and create a buzzing hiss from high trees.
War department confirms Meyersdale residents Pfc John Klingaman 23 wounded in France and Sgt Harry Walker 25 wounded in New Guinea. Klingaman sent from a rest camp after injury and expected to rejoin his unit. Walker served 30 months with prior time in the Canal Zone. Both men previously worked in local Meyersdale factories.
Swiss radio reported two American bombers forced down at Duebendorf after Swiss anti aircraft fire. The FCC recorded broadcast said 18 crew members were uninjured and interned following the incident.
About 5,000 strikers returned to work Monday as disputes at two war plants were settled, but nationwide idleness still exceeded 17,000. Houdaille-Hershey's Houde Engineering in Buffalo saw 2,500 employees go back, while 1,700 more joined later in protest over wage deductions.
Somerset County exceeded its Fifth War Loan quota by 130000, reaching 2877644.50 dollars versus the 2747500 dollar target. E bond sales totaled 1030493.50 against a 1165000 goal. County Chairman Dr. Guy N Hartman commended workers and noted nearly 9000 in service, praising ongoing public support and strong solicitation effort.
Jean Davis and relatives from Pittsburgh returned after eight days in Atlantic City New Jersey. Mrs Helen Fisher from Brookline Pittsburgh spent the weekend with relatives in South Center Avenue. Akron residents Mrs William Ream and family visited their mother in Shanksville. Weekend guests included Pvt William McQuade and family from Camp Wheeler Georgia and other relatives. Miss Betty Heiple of Somerset returned from visiting Pvt and Mrs Arthur Hartzell in Sioux Falls South Dakota.

Earl Rice of Reading was jailed Monday afternoon after a hearing before Justice C. J. Harrison Jr. on charges of assault and battery and surety of the peace. He was committed to jail for the 1 September court.

Dr Charles E Grissinger files a bill in equity against Reon and Goldie Wills of Somerset township claiming breach of a 10 year occupancy agreement on 68 acres along Upper Centerville road. He asserts Wills leased the dwelling to Espy Clark and rented out hay fields to others, despite notice of termination in June 1944 and intent to refund the purchase price.
Harrisburg July 31 Penn sylvania's largest tomato crop ever planted is ripening fast but faces labor shortages. High school students and prisoners of war will be used in cannery sections, yet they may be insufficient to pick and process the crop. Canning plants at Chambersburg and Biglarville are operating, with July starting the first commercial canning. First plantings are expected to peak early.
Mrs Helen Mazer of Berlin RD 2 filed a writ in Common Pleas with attorney A M Matthews to regain custody of her two children Kenneth Boyd and Bernard Allen after she says Kenneth Mazer took them July 27 and left them with C H Glessner. The hearing is scheduled for 9:30 Tuesday morning.
The agreement states payment in cash or partly in cash with the balance to be assumed as payment of money owed to both the Federal Land Bank and the Baltimore Land Commission.
Two Altoona paratrooper brothers have been missing in France since D Day. Cpl. Patrick C. Farrell age 28 is missing per war department notice to Mr. and Mrs. B. P. Farrell of Mill Run. Their son Pvt. James J. Farrell, 25, is also reported missing. another brother Sgt. Jack Farrell serves in New Guinea.
