Washington reports the August trade gap shrank to 1.62 billion, following a 2.99 billion July rise. Economists view the smaller deficit as a hopeful sign for the economy, though persistent trade problems worry them for inflation and dollar value abroad.
The dollar eased in Europe while edging up in Tokyo as markets anticipated the August U.S. trade deficit release. A London dealer said the scene was more nervous than active. The gold market remained highly active with many buy orders from those hedging against a weaker dollar.
Washington reports President Carter aims to push era products as United States imports surge in cars televisions and oil. The nation bought 26.5 billion more from other countries last year than it sold, widening the trade deficit and fueling inflation and a weaker dollar.
The Susan B Anthony dollar coin portrait of the women's rights advocate was approved by the House and sent to President Carter who is expected to sign. The bill aims to release the new coin for use next summer.

A community meeting in Hermleigh resulted in forming the Hermleigh Volunteer Fire Department. Superintendent Ray Simmons outlined a purchased US Forestry Service truck with a 320 gallon tank, costing 7000 dollars with half funded by the state. residents must raise the rest. Directors nominated include Hollis Ward Tommie Henry and Lonnie ae. Special guests from Fluvanna explained department operations.
Texas drivers with 12 month or shorter car registrations from last spring may face expiration this month. The state’s new system issues month by month expirations and may not mail notices from Austin. Scurry County tax assessor says several owners missed the deadline by relying on past notice timing.
Directors of the Scurry County Producers Association were told they must reach 90 percent of cotton land in the county for state participation in a boll weevil control program. Deadline moved up to Friday morning after 60,000 acres accounted, 30,000 outstanding, well short of the 90 percent target. Texas Agriculture officials will decide at 9 a.m. Friday if Scurry and other counties qualify for funds, with Milton Stephens warning that missing the cutoff could end hopes of reentry.

Fall semester enrollment at Western Texas College totals 1,184 students. Of these 1,131 are academic credit hour students and 53 are in clock hour vocational programs. Full-time enrollment declines 5.9 percent from 1977, academic enrollments rise 2 percent, and vocational technical enrollments fall 10.9 percent.
Weather bulletin notes high Tuesday around 64, low 57, morning reading 67 with .56 inches of precipitation. West Texas expects occasional showers south of the mountains through Thursday, diminishing tonight and Thursday, with clearer conditions elsewhere and warmer conditions west of the region. Highs in the 60s in rain areas and 68 to 82 elsewhere, with Thursday highs of 75 to 82 and lows from the upper 40s to mid 60s.
