An enemy battalion of about 300 equipped with flamethrowers and rockets attacked the Katum camp near the Cambodian border. Some 135 attackers were killed, and about 1,000 plastic explosive blocks were found, with 1,000 unused rocket grenades indicating strong local support. The camp housed about 400 South Vietnamese irregulars and 10-12 American advisers. 11 South Vietnamese were killed, 10 wounded, one missing, while no American advisers were hurt.
In Paris the United States and North Vietnam clashed over blame for the war at the 23rd session. Ambassador Xuan Thuy warned peace is impossible if the other side refuses a political settlement. Ambassador Harriman called for a halt to fighting and accused Hanoi of violating international law as talks proceed to another exchange next week.
Two distinguished foreigners, Shozo Uno and Ichiro Honjo, visited Snyder and toured the American Magnesium site west of town. They met with AM executives and toured Gail wells before continuing to Lubbock, amid U.S. military actions reported nearby.
Milford C Gardner 64 of 2612 Twenty third Street dies from injuries after a 60 foot fall from a derrick platform while a salt water well is being drilled for American Magnetum Co six miles south of Gail. Justice of the Peace Roy Haynes of Gail issues a coroner verdict, body sent to Bell Seale Funeral Home Snyder for arrangements. Survived by wife Ola Mae Gardner a son Johnny Dale Gardner a sister and four brothers and one grandchild.
The advance gifts division continues work as preparations begin for subsequent drive phases. A breakfast for business education is set at 7 a.m. Thursday at the First Baptist Church with no solicitation. Officials will share campaign details and agency participation as the general drive starts next Monday September 30.
Aztec Manufacturing Co of Fort Worth bids $28,969 to replace many U S 84 highway signs from Ezell Key Grain Co southeast of Snyder to Basin Wax Products Co northwest of town. Homer Ray, Texas Highway Department engineer, says signs resemble Interstate style though US 84 is not an Interstate.
Sen. Henry M. Jackson states the United States will spend about a third more on underground nuclear testing this fiscal year to support the SPARTAN missile’s nuclear warhead. He notes the 157 underground tests since the 1963 treaty and stresses continued development under the Limited Nuclear Test Ban Treaty while addressing public reception and nonproliferation concerns.
The Air Force grounded about 90 F111A swingwing fighter bombers while investigators probe the ninth crash in under two years. Critics like Sen. John L. McClellan question the VSTOL aircraft's future amid ongoing problems.

Rioting students clashed with police in Mexico City for over 24 hours as heavy rain dispersed crowds. At least 15 people died with unconfirmed reports of more deaths amid clashes near vocational schools. Police fought snipers as authorities prep for the October Olympic Games in Mexico City.
