The Abu Simbel temples of Ramses II and his queen were salvaged and moved to a new site 222 feet above their original location above Lake Nasser. UNESCO began the effort in 1958 to prevent submersion by the Aswan Dam waters with a $36 million effort funded by nations including the United States and Egypt.
