Plans Revealed For Proposed Church Merger
CHICAGO AP Thirteen-bis hops of the Methodist Church and the Evangelical United Brethren Church unveiled a plan to form an 11 million member United Methodist Church. Talks have lasted eight years with a target merger date in 1968. A Nashville meeting in December will refine the plan for the Methodist general conference in Pittsburgh next spring. The plan aims to strengthen Protestant unity amid other recent church mergers and could pave the way for further Methodist union with England’s church. The Methodist Church, largest U.S. Protestant denomination, numbers about 10.23 million. the EUB includes 750 thousand members in the United States and Canada.
