In northeast Iran aftershocks spread panic as officials report 15,000 dead or injured from a 7.7 magnitude quake that destroyed 40 villages and damaged 60 others. Tabas city bears heavy losses with two thirds of its 12,000 residents killed or injured.
Greta pounded northern Honduras with winds up to 125 mph and heavy rain. The U S National Hurricane Center placed the center near the Patuca River, warning tides to 10 feet and rainfall may exceed 15 inches in the mountains, with potential serious floods ahead.
In northwest Nicaragua the national guard recaptured a final rebel center while another area held steady against Sandinista guerrillas in the south. A Sunday dawn crash on US 350 in Mitchell County left Cristobal G. Rodriguez and Bela Bisenta dead. Six others, including children Lupe Rodriquez and Daniel Rodriquez, were injured and sent to Root Memorial Hospital. George A. Wortham, driver of the truck, was treated after transfer. DPS investigates. charges possible.
Snyder City Council plans first reading of an ordinance granting Texas Electric Service Co a 6.7 percent rate increase as consultants recommended. TESCO had sought 24.4 percent last May and the PUC in Austin has not yet ruled. The meeting also reviews street equipment purchases, seeder and cutter bids, city depository, sidewalk use, city street work, and Retired Senior Volunteer Program amendments.
