Tropical storm Greta moves across the central Caribbean and is forecast to intensify to a hurricane today. At 6 a.m. EDT Greta sat about 14.0 N, 77.5 W, roughly 275 miles south of Kingston Jamaica, forecasting westward at 18 mph.
Somoza forces press rebel strongholds in Leon and Managua as government troops and aircraft strike insurgents led by Sandinista Tillas seeking to regain control of northwestern Nicaragua. Church groups and even President Carter issue an open letter supporting the embattled government.

CAMP DAVID Md AP Participants in the Mideast summit said they would wind up the conference on Sunday though differences remain in key areas. White House spokesman Jody Powell noted progress in some areas while Carter pushed for broader agreement. An afternoon meeting with Anwar Sadat and an evening session with Menachem Begin were planned, with ending documents possible Sunday or Monday.
A Rockford Illinois minister and Nazarene pastor fondly recalls motorcycling as a relaxing pursuit. He began riding after WWII and later homesteaded in Alaska briefly before ministry calls took him to Snyder in 1977. He describes riding as freeing, says he’s never had an accident, and lists bikes from a dirt bike to a Honda GL 1000. He favors long trips, and notes riding offers a sense of nature not found in cars.
Northern Electric Co. announces an open house Friday afternoon inviting the public to tour its North Snyder plant on the south side of U.S. 04 near Clairemont Road from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Visitors can see the manufacture of automatic electric blankets from start to finish, at a plant now part of Sunbeam’s Northern division, with products marketed nationwide.

The question of when Fathers Day began centers on Mrs. John B. Dodd who organized a 1910 celebration in Spokane, Washington, and is now observed on the third Sunday in June. Some sources credit Dr. Robert T. Webb for a 1908 Fairmont service at Mrs. Charles Clayton’s request, noting it as an early homage to fathers.
A 49 year old Pedro Pete Silva was fatally stabbed in the Green Hill Addition while his 22 year old son was knifed. Ruben Delao, 24, was arrested on a murder charge in Snyder, and Felipe Silva was reportedly involved in a confrontation before his father and another man were stabbed outside a residence. The incident occurred early Saturday morning with details from Sheriff Keith Collier.
The elder Silva suffered two chest stab wounds and two facial cuts. Felipe Silva received 15 superficial knife wounds. He was treated and released from Cogdell Memorial Hospital. The incident occurred around 12:15 a.m. Saturday. Delac fled in a patrol car and surrendered. Delac remains jailed in Scurry County with bond set at 15,000. Silva, a native of D'Hanis, has a large surviving family in Snyder and other states. Funeral arrangements are pending.
Snyder is one site among nine in a region considered for a rehabilitation center. L D Womble director of the local council on alcoholism and drug abuse says a public hearing will be at 7 30 p m Monday at the Seward County Coliseum with county representatives and officers to gather information and hear community input. The center, aimed at helping offenders, would be located near the geographic center and near available resources.
