Arrests of 18 Communists Target Smith Act Violations
The Justice Department announced the arrests of 18 Midwest and West Coast Communist Party leaders on charges of conspiring to overthrow the government by force. Among those named are leaders from Missouri Washington state and Michigan with detentions in St. Louis Rock Island Seattle Detroit Los Angeles Portland Eugene Chicago and Minneapolis. Helen Mary Winter, 44, noted as the Michigan organizational secretary, is among the detainees. Others include Dorothy Rose Forest 37 James Frederick Forest 42 Marcus Alphonse Murphy 44 and William Sentner 45. All are charged under the Smith Act and were taken into custody on warrants issued by U S commissioners and federal judges with the attorney general authorizing the complaints.

Hot Weather Returns To Haunt State Again
Texas faced hot and dry conditions with scattered thundershowers as the U. S. Weather Bureau forecast similar weather for Thursday. The Hill Country floods in West and South Central Texas last week are noted, with highs of 102 at Corsicana and 101 at Presidio. Rain totals included Tyler .70 inch, Cotulla .06 and Austin .02.

Train Wreck Kills Koreans Near Seoul
An explosion on a bridge near Seoul derailed two coaches and killed as many as Koreans while injuring about 200 others. Affected passengers plunged into a 40 foot stream as U.S. Army troops and British forces organized rescue and medical aid at nearby facilities. Three American soldiers were slightly injured. one 18 year old Korean girl lost an arm before rescue. The cause of the blast was not disclosed.

Compromise refused in school building liquidated damages dispute
