The EPA announced the 1979 model year fuel economy ratings with diesel powered Volkswagen Rabbits leading the list at about 41 miles per gallon. Diesel models filled the top three spots, and the Datsun 210 led gasoline powered cars at around 35 miles per gallon.

A Harvard mediator ended the five month postal labor dispute by increasing workers pay beyond the rejected offer while lifting a cap on cost of living raises. Healy also allowed salaries to align with the rejected contract and gave the Postal Service more staffing flexibility as automation moves forward. The ruling covers 516,000 employees and finalizes terms under a binding agreement with the unions. Inserted: in New York, stock declines and rising rates affect markets as banks lift prime lending rates to 9 percent.
Rotan Police Chief Tom Jones resigns effective today to join Continental Bonding Service in Bryan. A Rotan officer since 1976, he has led the force for the past year with no replacement named.
A two month old clerks strike against a Virginia based railroad has escalated into a broad dispute with rail management seeking a federal injunction to bar strikes at 72 other major railroads. The Brotherhood of Railway and Airline Clerks argues no nationwide plan exists while industry officials warn of a possible nationwide shutdown.
