Leaders cut the fall drive target to 38,805.60 dollars about two dollars per person in Scurry County. They hope tight budgeting and hard work yield a full effort this year as several years of near-misses have followed. Project Stormfury details and purpose are also described.
In Van Nuys California authorities blamed sabotage for a dawn explosion spree at the California National Guard Armory. Four two and a half ton trucks were damaged and a fifth destroyed. fuses and devices were found in several other engines. No injuries were reported and FBI joined the arson inquiry.
Snyder reports a morning temperature of 55 degrees and a high of 85 with a 55 degree low later. Northwest Texas and various regions show fair conditions tonight and Wednesday with warmer highs ranging from 82 to 90 degrees and lows from mid 40s to low 70s. Winds along the coastal area shift from northwest to east to northeast, 5 to 18 knots.
The 27th Marine Regiment begins return to the United States from Da Nang as roughly half the unit stays behind. The battalion fought near Hue and Da Nang during Tet, tallying 2,000 enemy killed, 463 captured weapons, 292 dead and 1,900 Purple Hearts.
Premier Oldrich Cernik flew to Moscow and signed an agreement on natural gas supply to Czechoslovakia and a protocol on other economic issues with Soviet Premier Alexei Kosygin. The move follows Soviet promises of long term gas deliveries and possible pipeline cooperation.
British Foreign Secretary Michael Stewart wrapped two day talks in Bucharest with Romania's leaders on East West detente after the Warsaw Pact invasion of Czechoslovakia. He met Prime Minister Maurer and Foreign Minister Manescu with Ceausescu and left Wednesday after a news conference.
The bullet ridden body of Robert Allen Westernman, 28, was found at the Abilene filling station he operated. The cash register, believed to contain several hundred dollars, was missing. Police said the holdup resembled a recent robbery and slaying of a filling station attendant at Trent, 16 miles east of Abilene.
A crash between a gravel truck and a pickup on Texas 114 in Grapevine northeast of Fort Worth killed three men. The dead were Lloyd Flannigan of Henderson, Hugh Green of Grand Prairie, and Roosevelt Mason, with Billy Ray Truesdale of Dallas driving the gravel truck.
NATO nations cut conventional forces to near parity with the Warsaw Pact while the Soviet Union quietly builds missiles, creating anxiety in London and Washington. The Czechoslovak invasion prompts Kiesinger to seek a NATO Summit to reassess strategy amid a tougher Kremlin mood.
U S Marines report 34 North Vietnamese killed in two near Rock Pile clashes just north of the demilitarized zone. Five Marines died and 23 wounded in the battles. A bunker sweep uncovered 500 mortar rounds 2200 pounds of rice and Soviet Czech and French fabric. A separate unit found 37 carbines 10 launchers seven machine guns and nine flame throwers.
Gov. Nelson Rockefeller names U.S. Representative Charles F. Goodell a fellow Republican to fill the late Senator Robert F. Kennedy's seat. Rockefeller praised Goodell's work at the Republican Convention and for drafting the 1968 party platform.
The University of Texas reports fall enrollment expected at 31,500 students, up 1,659 from last year. University officials announced the figure today as part of the fall enrollment forecast.
Snyder Chamber agriculture committee approved an Agri-Business tour for September 20 from 8:30 a.m. to noon. The event starts at Soil Conservation and ASCS offices near Thirty-fifth Street and Avenue S with buses provided. Stops will feature demonstration projects and agribusiness displays ahead of the Scurry County Fair opening the first weekend in October.
