Anwar Sadat and Menachem Begin held face to face talks at Camp David with President Carter coordinating a second session after an afternoon meeting on Wednesday. The three leaders met for about two hours on a flagstone patio, but no progress was reported.
Moscow reports Francis J. Crawford is convicted of buying on the black market and given a five year suspended sentence. The U.S. Embassy says he is free to leave. Crawford went to the embassy to seek an exit visa, which typically takes four to seven days but could be expedited, possibly as soon as Friday night.
AP reports medical detectives investigate airborne Legionnaires disease in midtown Manhattan nine people affected including three deaths with Pennsylvania American Convention in Philadelphia confirmed as the cause of one death and suspected in two others. Six non fatal cases are under review.
The SDN Column relays a Mencken inspired piece commenting on a hypothetical future president from the South and mocked public figures. It then notes USDA figures on antibiotic restrictions in animal feeds costing farmers up to 700 million dollars annually and potentially 2 billion in higher meat prices, arguing every move in Washington hurts consumers. The House voted 206 to 191 to uphold President Carter s veto of the 37 billion defense authorization bill including the nuclear aircraft carrier project. Leaders expected a closer tally but the vote sent the measure back to committee for redrafting as both sides claimed the carrier would shape military finance.
Scurry and Fisher County officials certified petitions for a consolidated Hermleigh and Snyder school district election. The earliest call date is January 20. Two polling places needed for Hermleigh voters in each county and a separate box for Snyder voters. If approved in both districts, consolidation would take effect after county canvass. failure in any location voids the measure. Henry Kissinger quips about Constitution study clearing up his political ambition and a run for the Senate in 1980.
More than 1,000 Snyder area residents are expected to fill the Snyder School auditorium tonight for the Southern Kitchen Cooking School. The event begins at 7 p.m. and tickets are free but limited at local merchants. Admission is open to non ticket holders 10 minutes before showtime. Door prizes include a microwave from Roe's Furniture and Appliance and 20 sacks of groceries donated by Everybody's Thriftway. Home economist Pat Pittman and program coordinator Joan Powell oversee the program. See Cooking Page 6.
Property owners in Snyder faced a 19 cent tax increase for the hospital bonds. Officials had stated no rise would be needed, but a SDN report from the Oct 10 commissioners court meeting noted tax support was required. It originally estimated 14 cents but the bonds ended up needing 19 cents.
Snyder's 1978 construction spending surged toward seven and a half million as August permits push city totals near record highs. The fiscal year total reached 8.58 million, approaching last year's 8.72 million. Cogdell Memorial Hospital addition dominates August costs, with residential permits adding two single family dwellings and nine mobile homes. Overall calendar year construction hit 7.47 million by September before year end.
Faculty will host an Ice Cream Social in the Central Courtyard starting at 7 p.m. as students meet the faculty. The Howdy Dance follows at 9 p.m. in the Student Center. Classes in the fall semester began today with late registration through Sept. 15.
Midwest Electric Cooperative will hold its annual meeting this evening at the Scurry County Coliseum. Registration begins at 6 p.m. and a catered barbecue dinner starts at 7 p.m. The co op will elect two directors and special entertainment by Cindy Hataway and the Country Travelers. All members are invited and prizes will be awarded.

City Manager George Patterson announced an alley clean up to remove long neglected trash and rubble not handled by regular sanitation. A crew with a truck and front end loader will clear alleys city wide over several weeks, urging residents to remove items they wish kept before the crew arrives.
