Polls open at 8 a m and close at 7 p m Tuesday as Scurry County voters decide a constitutional amendment to raise Texas State Senate seats from 31 to 39. Passage would add urban area representation. defeat could trigger redistricting of senatorial boundaries. All Scurry County polling places will be open for the election.
A 10 foot python, six inches thick, was reported loose in south Fort Worth. Owner Tony Granes says the snake Dagwood is harmless and likes chickens. John Binder Jr., 11, slept with the snake while visiting Granes, who keeps ten other snakes and a pet hawk in his garage.
Readings show high temperatures from the upper 80s to mid 90s across Texas with 7 am observations in the 60s and 70s. Lows range from the 60s to low 70s tonight with highs Tuesday in the upper 80s to 100s. Areas may see partly cloudy skies, scattered showers, and variable humidity across North Central, Northeast, Northwest, South Central, Southeast and Southwest Texas.
Hurricane Betsy pounded northern Bahamas with 75 mph gusts and aimed at southeast Florida. Nassau and Abaco residents evacuated and warned as the storm stalled east of Cape Kennedy and threats reached Cape Kennedy to Key West.
The death toll rose through the Labor Day weekend as motorists crowded highways for summer’s end. The National Safety Council warned the count could reach record highs, with 393 deaths by Sunday night and an estimate of 500 to 600 expected overall.
British seaman James W. English, 29, of Blackpool England, swam alone in the Mediterranean for 24 hours after being knocked overboard from his ship near the Sicilian coast. He staggered ashore nude and exhausted on Sunday morning. He said he swam until he ached and could not tell how far land was.
New York World’s Fair drew 317 310 visitors on closing Sunday, bringing total paid attendance this year to 17 295 485. Closing day remains October 17.
Indian and Pakistani forces clash in the Wagh-La hore sector with India claiming initial success after crossing the border from Punjab. Pakistan says its troops have contained the Indian advance toward Lahore as air sorties and rocket attacks continue amid a declared state of emergency in Rawalpindi.
The provisional government orders the suspension of all but three radio stations in the capital district citing political excitability. Only Radio Santo Domingo, a station run by the Organization of American States, and a U.S. armed forces outlet remain. Radio San Isidro attacks are cited as the trigger for the decree amid tensions surrounding General Elias Wessin y Wessin and the 1963 Bosch coup. Commodore Francisco Rivera Caminero states the armed forces back Hector Garcia-Godoy.
A Sunday night storm toppled a sheet metal school bus barn and damaged 14 buses near Littlefield, South Plains. Debris spread across a wide area as showers lingered in southern Texas Panhandle this morning.
A U S pilot was plucked from North Vietnamese waters by a rescue plane after his F105 was damaged. Four F4C Phantoms diverted from another mission bombed the pursuing patrol boat and recovered him. Another bomber crew bailed out from a Da Nang takeoff and was found in good condition. Strategic Air Command B52s bombed a Viet Cong jungle stronghold as Marines claimed 25 Viet Cong killed in cross-fire.
Famed physician Albert Schweitzer, 90, was buried near the hospital he built in Lambarene Gabon as leaders and locals mourned. Ambassadors and officials attended the service while Africans and Europeans joined in prayers and songs. The death followed a stroke after a long medical career and a life devoted to humanitarian work.
Dallas fugitive David Fred Hagler, 45, is jailed in Sydney awaiting deportation to Hawaii after police traced him to Canberra. He jumped a $15,000 bail on insurance fraud charges in Dallas and entered Australia on a six month tourist visa before the Immigration Department canceled the visa.
An Associated Press report describes a Ku Klux Klan rally near Pine Bluff Arkansas and at Stone Mountain Georgia with several hundred attendees. Leaders from the Klan pledge offices and address threats to civil rights figures and the court system while denouncing integration and communism.
