The Colorado River Municipal Water District nears completion of a 33 mile 36 inch pipeline from the Martin County pump station to Big Spring. Final joints were placed at Big Spring with cleanup and testing of the east section remaining. Pressure tests have run on the west half, and the project parallels a 27 inch line from 1952.
Five surgical teams transplanted a heart two kidneys and a lung from a single donor Nelva Lou Hernandez 20 of Houston to four recipients at Methodist Hospital under Dr Michael DeBakey The heart went to William Carroll of Scottsdale Arizona one lung lobe to William Whaley of Fort Lauderdale kidney to William Kaiser of Odessa and the other kidney to Thomas Steven son of Houston This marked the hospital's first heart transplant and reflects Houston as a center for transplants with St Luke's and Dr Denton Cooley leading the field The donor died from a gunshot wound to the head
