Secretary of State Cyrus R. Vance says Egypt and Israel may wrap up their historic peace treaty by November 19, the first anniversary of Egyptian President Anwar Sadat's Jerusalem visit.
Two Soviet UN workers Valdik Enger age 39 and Rudolf Chernyayev age 43 were found guilty of conspiring to obtain secret U S defense data and delivering it to the Soviet government. The jury returned verdicts Friday on charges of espionage and conspiracy.
Vatican City AP reports that cardinals begin a conclave to elect a new pope, the second in under two months. The voting bloc shows non Europeans ahead of Europeans for the first time, while Italians remain the largest national group.
Washington AP report says a program by the Agriculture Department and state agencies detected aflatoxin in corn samples in six states. Corn samples named include Carolina Texas and Virginia, according to an official from the economics division.
The Snyder Chamber of Commerce, the Texas Industrial Commission and local officials held a Wednesday job fair aimed at filling unfilled Snyder area positions. Participants noted that fairs save time and money for workers and employers and can attract applicants who would not otherwise apply. Housing emerged as a key issue with officials warning that lack of rental units or affordable homes could deter workers from staying. Mayor John Fagin likened the effort to a growth driver, saying housing and jobs reinforce each other.
Officials report reporters describe a 16 hour wait after polls closed as votes were counted by hand in Scurry County. County Clerk Beverly Ainsworth and county commissioners support faster balloting, leading Scurry County to begin moving from the paper ballot system used since 1886.

The Senate voted 71 to 13 to end debate on President Carter's energy plan clearing the way for final passage. The watered down package includes a home insulation tax credit up to 300 dollars and a tax on fuel inefficient cars that takes effect in 1980. Administration supporters celebrated with cautious relief after the House vote that blocked splitting taxes and regulatory provisions.

The first of two aerial sprayings to curb boll weevils in Scurry County cotton fields will begin Monday morning. Milton Stephens, president of the Scurry County Producers Association, says contracts for chemicals and spraying were let recently. Participation fell short of the target, leaving some areas unsprayed.
Ray Peveler of Snyder Independent School District appears on the county payroll. He says he has three full time staff in his office and at times has helped the county with the tax roll. He states there were no applications from Black or Mexican American candidates for the three full time posts, though part time Black and Mexican American workers were used in the past.
