Carpenter Jack Snyman spent 50 days in a snake cage with 24 deadly serpents near Hartbeespoort, ending with champagne and relief. He surpassed the 36 day record set in 1975 by Trevor Kruger and extended his reign to protect the title.
A damp Memorial Day weekend brought showers and hail to Snyder area with up to 1.28 inches in spots and reports of three inch hail in the Helmirth area. In Miami fans celebrated John Wayne’s 72nd birthday with a giant card and tributes as he remains hospitalized for cancer at UCLA Medical Center. Texas Gov. Clements proclaimed John Wayne Day and President Carter signed a law authorizing a special gold medal, praising The Duke’s courage and patriotism. DC-10 inspections were ordered nationwide as FAA chief Bond announced grounding of all DC-10s at 3 a.m. EDT Tuesday after a critical engine bolt issue.
Bob Hope celebrated his 76th birthday with a USO show for about 1,000 Navy and Marine personnel aboard a flight deck. Henry Kissinger Don Knotts and Diahann Carroll joined in a tribute to Hope to be aired on NBC. Hope called entertaining the Navy at peace a real kick after years of entertaining troops on gas lines in California.
In Jackson Mississippi an evacuation near a 1400 acre test site south of Hattiesburg was ordered after scientists found a radioactive frog and a deformed lizard linked to 1960s atomic tests. A university spokesman said a fouled lab dish triggered the warning while officials said low level contamination remains and tests will continue. Gov Cliff Finch urged about a dozen nearby families to evacuate within a mile of the Tatum Salt Dome.
Federal agents were sent to Decatur after a Saturday clash between blacks and Ku Klux Klan members during a Memorial Day weekend incident. Four people were wounded when shots were exchanged as Klansmen tried to stop a march linked to Tommy Lee Hines Jr. A plan for further protests was reported by Rev. R B Cotton, with SCLC involvement.
In USUNDI South Africa AP reports Paramount Chief Gatsha Buthelezi warning that Zulu people will rise again if white rulers deny freedom. He spoke at a three day ceremony marking the 1879 Anglo Zulu War and led hundreds of leopard skin clad warriors in a giya war dance.
Snyder reports highs of 83 Saturday and 86 Sunday with lows in the 40s to 50s and early morning readings near 60. West Texas skies vary from partly cloudy to clear through Tuesday with scattered thunderstorms, warmer Panhandle, and highs mainly in the 80s to upper 90s in the Big Bend Valley.
