The Texas House approved a measure allowing school boards to cancel the federally funded breakfast program in schools where fewer than half of eligible students participate. The bill cleared 77 to 59 and moves to the Senate. Another bill to leave the program if a district has no cafeterias also passed, 89 to 46.
In Austin the Taxpayers' Bill of Rights initiative failed again in the Texas House, needing two-thirds to proceed. Representative Carlyle Smith led 79 to 59 in a bid to bring the measure to a special session, but the initiative remains blocked for the current session.
A routine store fire at JE's, a women’s clothing shop in downtown Shelby, escalated into a violent blast. Five Shelby firemen and a gas company worker died, and at least 25 were injured as brick walls and flames roared after the wall cella collapsed and an explosion occurred.

David Sands is a prolific tinkerer who designs and builds across fields from aviation to dentistry. Since 1963 he has rebuilt his home at 2604 El Paso Ave and created equipment for a trailer park, a window frame roller, a baseball diamond an edge, and a dental glue gun. He helped co design the S-2 crop dusting plane in 1958, though he has never flown.

Inquiries explain Snyder schools run 183 days and end June 1 while peers finish earlier. The district uses fewer holidays at Christmas and spring, starts later after Labor Day, and has lost days to severe winter weather, delaying this spring’s dismissal.
The School tax office will be closed Monday in observance of Memorial Day. The administration office will be open and schools will be in session.

Enrollment for the first summer session at Western Texas College will be held on May 30 with classes beginning May 31. Day class registration starts at the Student Center from 8 30 a m to 12 noon and 1 to 4 p m. Evening class registration runs 6 30 to 8 30 p m in the Administration Building. Nine week evening session ends Aug 1. Dormitory housing available for first six week and nine week sessions. Complete copies of the summer schedule are in the Administration Building.
The DC-10 jetliner American Airlines Flight 191 lost an engine after takeoff from O’Hare, rolled left, and crashed nose first exploding in a fireball. All 271 aboard died. investigators say pilot error is unlikely. Witnesses described a 500 foot high flame and widespread destruction with no survivors.
Carl Whitfield, 69, owner of Whitfield's Fabric Center in Snyder, plans to retire in about three weeks. He came to Snyder in 1941 and built a 38 year business through hard work and community ties, crediting friendships and fair treatment of customers for his longevity.
