A severe storm system lashed West Texas with tornadoes and thunderstorms. Five houses were demolished between Snyder and Abilene, farm buildings damaged near Brownwood, and roofs torn from a hangar at Merkel. Two tornadoes were sighted near Robert Lee, while hail from half to two inches fell across Snyder San Angelo Abilene and Panhandle towns Clarendon Amarillo and Dumas.
A violent rain and hail storm spawned a tornado west of Hermleigh damaging four farm homes and leaving one roofless. Witnesses described a twisting funnel path that moved across fields, with residents escaping to safety as the storm struck multiple houses. No injuries were reported.
School officials say reports will be handed out at 3 p.m. on Tuesday May 28 in buildings with no bus service that day. Students may pick up reports between 3 and 4 p.m. or have them mailed. Superintendent Bill J. Hood thanks parents and the public for cooperation in finishing the school year.
Prague reports Warsaw Pact maneuvers will bring Soviet and allied forces into Czechoslovakia next month. Officials note fewer troops than in Vitava exercises two years ago, while Czech leaders pledge no new political parties amid tensions over liberalization.
