President Carter will travel to Chicago this afternoon to raise funds for the fall campaign. He will hold a televised regional news conference and address the Cook County Democratic precampaign dinner to soothe lingering tensions over last year’s invitation rejection.
Paris reports the French Foreign Legion paratroopers began withdrawing from southern Zaire a week after retaking Kolwezi from rebels and helping evacuate foreigners. A Belgian proposal for an all African peacekeeping force aims to secure mineral wealth flows to the West.
In Norway an lumber truck sideswiped a bus carrying 28 American tourists on a mountain road. Police report seven passengers died and seven were injured four seriously as thin boards pierced windows. The crash occurred Wednesday.
The National Safety Council estimates 400 to 500 deaths may occur in traffic over the three day Memorial Day weekend unless travelers buckle seat belts and a 55 mph speed limit is observed. Last year 432 died. the 1969 three day record was 507 while 1968 saw 629 on a four day weekend.
LaVerta Lovell of Snyder Chamber staff faced a rude wake up when a Vernon motel was robbed during the Santa Rosa Roundup. Ken Curtis slept through the incident while Festus from Gunsmoke toured Vernon with his wife. Curtis quipped he never heard a thing as the case lingered in memory.
Allen Barklage, a 30 year old Vietnam veteran from St. Louis, wrestled a gun from Barbara Oswald in a helicopter near the Marion Illinois penitentiary. He shot her as the craft, 600 feet above ground, reeled out of control while she claimed they would take three convicts. Oswald reportedly chartered the flight from St. Louis under pretense of flying to Cape Girardeau Missouri.
French President Giscard dEstaing urged a new world disarmament institute under the United Nations and endorsed a US plan for early warning systems. He called for a Helsinki conference meeting on disarmament in Europe to cut weapons in the Atlantic to the Urals. Snyder high seniors urged to attend tonight steak dinner at Towle Park barn at 7 p.m.
Houston AP reports energy conferees end a six month deadlock to lift federal price controls on domestically produced and new gas on Jan 1, 1985 with an annual 10 percent increase until then. Gulf Oil Tenneco Gas Transport back the bill while Lone Star Gas seeks further study.
Supt. Bill J. Hood says little need for playground gear was seen in past years though some elementary schools have a few items. No recess now and all elementary schools have gymnasiums with supervised P E programs. Past student injuries likely reduced equipment use.
Ernest Waller found a $279 billfold with credit cards beside U S Highway 84 about two weeks ago. He returned it after attempting to locate the owner at his own expense, later turning the case over to Scurry County sheriff’s deputies. The owner, Gleda Solomon, wife of a Fort Hood soldier, was contacted and the funds were mailed to her as a cashier’s check.
The Sunset Advisory Commission staff in Austin urged unifying 27 occupational licensing boards under a single umbrella agency to save about 2 million dollars yearly and align policies with public interest. They cited conflicts of interest, with many board members themselves licensed in the fields, and said the Legislature in 1979 would decide which boards continue or die. The morticians board signaled reforms to stay alive, offering non mortician members and itemized pricing for services if kept.
Reading at 7 a.m. today shows 71 degrees with no precipitation. West Texas remains partly cloudy with scattered thunderstorms through Friday, some possibly severe north late today and tonight. Highs will range from the middle 70s to near 100 in the Panhandle and Big Bend, with nighttime lows from the lower 60s to near 70.
Colorado City embraces liberal trend as two women win mayor and mayor pro tem posts. Jessie Munoz, 28, becomes council member alongside a young sheriff, city manager, and city clerk. Marian Bassham, nurse and Spade Ranch owner, serves as mayor with Jody Neff acting in her absence. James Campbell, a Sulphur Springs native, is city manager.
