Cotton Bill Wins House Agriculture Panel Approval

The House Agriculture Committee approved a bill to end the two price system for cotton via a domestic subsidy. Chairman Harold Cooley announced a 19-15 vote with all Republicans opposing and one Democrat against. An attempt to add a wheat measure failed 19-15, and a Quie amendment to grant the subsidy to growers was rejected. The bill would let the Agriculture Department decide subsidy recipients.

Federal government moves to block Wallace over Alabama enrollment

The Justice Department filed a complaint in U.S. District Court in Birmingham seeking to halt Governor George C. Wallace from barring Negro enrollment at the University of Alabama. Judge Seybourn H. Lynne ordered Wallace to appear June 3 to explain why a preliminary injunction should not be issued.

Spending bill cleared despite Connally protest in Texas

The Texas Legislature approved a 3.1 billion spending bill amid Gov. John Connally's strong opposition. House 117-30 and Senate 2 6 votes backed the measure after three days of negotiations. James Larkin Martin Dies at 87 in Snyder

James Larkin Martin 87 of 2607 Avenue Y died at 8 12 this morning at home. He was a Scurry County resident since 1924 a retired farmer born October 16 1875 in Missouri and married Susie Hawkins in Harrison Arkansas November 11 1896. Funeral services pending at Thirty seventh Street Church of Christ. He is survived by three daughters three sons two sisters fifteen grandchildren twelve great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren.
