Washington AP reports House energy conferees rejected a last minute bid to derail a natural gas pricing compromise. The plan would free natural gas from federal price controls in 1985, with conference leaders expecting Senate ratification after eventual approval.
Newburgh New York AP report says Joseph Colombo Sr a former underworld boss who was nearly paralyzed by an assassin’s bullets seven years ago died at St Luke’s Hospital he was 55 He had been admitted in a semicomatose state on May 6 following a 1971 shooting at an Italian American Day rally in Columbus Circle Manhattan dead Monday night and hospitalized earlier for years of illness.
Austin officials urged Washington to grant emergency relief by allowing grain sorghum slated for destruction under the set aside program to be grazed or made into hay in the drought hit South Texas counties. Agriculture Commissioner Reagan Brown led the request to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
In Charleston and beyond, interest in historic items like collector’s plates has surged since the bicentennial era. The first plate from 1895 now fetches thousands, reflecting genuine local pride in authentic historical offerings and a city famed for orderly preservation.
Laurie Hardcastle, 12, while fishing with her father near Lake J B Thomas, found seven stone blades and scrapers dating 700 to 1,000 years old as receding water revealed artifacts. Archaeologist John Portis notes scrapers for hides and blades as possible Comanche or Lipan Ache origin. Five blades were found Saturday, two more Sunday near the same spot.

The Supreme Court, in a 5-3 vote, ruled federal inspectors may not conduct unannounced spot checks of factories and businesses without a search warrant. The decision nullifies part of the 1970 Act, upholding requires probable cause before inspections. The ruling, praised by the U S Chamber of Commerce, limits OSHA enforcement across the private sector. The decision coincides with other rulings on obscenity, interstate hunting fees, and related issues.
Snyder's city sales tax rebates for the period ending April 27 totaled 13228, boosting the year to 161295 per State Comptroller Bo Bullock. Other area towns report last period and yearly totals: Sweetwater 13672 and 133922, Lamesa 0196 and 109261, Monahans 10090 and 98773, Leveland 8353 and 116846, Pecos 7624 and 98171, Colorado City 3245 and 45428, Roscoe 1227 and 6206, Rotan 591 and 12206.
A Service Awards Banquet at the Civic Center honored Colorado City Independent School District staff. About 200 attended as the board of education hosted the event aiming for quinquennial repeats. Mamie Lou New earned a 35 year pin amid retirement recognitions for Vivian Harris, Steve Hernandez, Grace Howell, and Florence Pratt.
