The Post Chamber of Commerce plans a $1 per plate charge for this year’s Fourth of July barbecue, with rising costs noted by Gene Moore at the May chamber meeting. The event sponsor must raise more money as inflation squeezes budgets.
On this date dates span events from Germany declaring war on Italy in 1915 to Israel capturing Eichmann in 1960 and major upheavals in Turkey Bolivia and Vietnam. The note also marks South Carolina’s statehood in 1788 and a naval academy cheating incident in 1974.
Snyder reports highs from 80s to low 90s across Texas with scattered storms tonight mainly southeast. Northwest to Panhandle expect clear to partly cloudy skies, lows 44 to 63, highs 80 to 88, while coast winds rise to 10 to 20 knots with seas 5 to 7 feet.
Thunderstorms with rain hail and high winds swept West Texas, triggering flash flooding and two funnel cloud sightings near Dunn and Lake Thomas. Snyder reported 1.50 inches. Big Spring saw heavy hail and four inches of rain while Wichita Falls faced evacuations and river cresting potential. Authorities noted evacuated residents and rising flood concerns along the Wichita River.
The Snyder Chamber board and building committee approved the office building plan with Wadleigh Construction Co the low bidder at 75887. About 28000 more is needed to finish, with over 52000 pledged. The site at Twenty third Street and Avenue R is donated by Roger Mize near the post office and the city will own the property for tax deductible contributions. A long term lease will be prepared for the June 2 city council meeting.
The Little Britches Rodeo starts at 8 p.m. tonight and again Saturday at the Scurry County Arena on West Thirtieth Street. Sponsored by Sundowners Riding Club, it features 400 entries in three age groups with events like bareback riding calf riding bull riding ribbon roping steer dabbing pole bending flag racing and barrel racing. Prizes include belt buckles ribbons and a hand-tooled Navajo saddle blanket for the top all around boy and girl in each group.
Nine Vietnamese families will move to the Fort Worth area once plans are finalized. The Catholic Charities Task Force seeks volunteers for housing, jobs, and donations. Sister Mary Elaine Breen says the aim is a permanent job plan and integration into society. A proposal suggests forming mini communities with small groupings nearby.
Texas Highway Commission endorsed the Port-to-Plains Highway concept presented by Bob Bailey of Abilene and the Port-to-Plains Association in a May 1 Austin hearing. The proposed route runs Amarillo to Houston with four land divided segments funded as safety and traffic demand allow, prioritizing sections needing the most attention.
The Texas Senate approved a compromise voter registration bill 24 to 6 sending it to the governor for signature. It requires all voters to obtain a new voting certificate before March 1 and re registration every two years to purge rolls, with no party pre registration required. A separate water bond bill was stalled in the House seeking to raise the limit from 400 million to 800 million.
President Ford said the United States may enter a new era of firmness in facing world problems and is prepared to act decisively. He cited Mayaguez and the NATO summit as steps to strengthen the Western alliance and modernize military capability while avoiding neo isolationism.
Gov Dolph Briscoe appoints Joe Carroll to the Texas Water Rights Commission replacing Burke Holman. Carroll, Snyder attorney and former assistant attorney general, must relocate to Austin for senate approval and service runs to Feb 1 1977. Carroll has long served with Rosser and Carroll and as Snyder city attorney.
Ben Raymond Harless 81, Loyd Mountain farmer, died at Cogdell Memorial Hospital. Funeral 1:30 p.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church officiated by Rev. Wallace Kirby and Rev. George White. Burial Hillside Memorial Gardens under Bell Seale Funeral Home. Born May 10 1894 in Collin County, survived by three daughters, two sons, one sister, 10 grandchildren, six great grandchildren. Lunch for family at Northeast Community Center at 11:30 a.m. Saturday.
