New York reports a continued stock market rebound in active trading. The AP average of 60 stocks rose 3.0 to 322.0 at noon as the Dow Jones gained 6.18 to 883.07 amid broad price advances and institutional buying.
Rains drenched North Central and East Texas on Sunday but eight cities saw temperatures above 100 degrees. Presidio hit 107 while San Angelo 104 and Wichita Falls 103. Abilene Junction Lubbock and Wink each reported 100. Over an inch fell in the morning with showers continuing in spots, and skies were to be partly cloudy through Tuesday with possible southern thundershowers.
Ernest E. Gibson, 58, of Fluvanna Route north of Snyder, died suddenly around noon today. Funeral arrangements were pending at Bolger Funeral Home. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Lillian Davis Gibson.
The Treasury asked Congress to raise the temporary debt limit to 332 billion for the new fiscal year beginning July 1. The current temporary ceiling plus deficits would push total debt past 318.6 billion, with $8 billion more borrowing expected after July. Secretary Fowler cited a $4 billion cash base plus a $3 billion contingency as the rationale for the new limit.
Snyder officials report the town reached the 100 degree mark Sunday amid a regional heat wave. Overnight lows stayed around 70, and a Pacific cool front arriving today was not expected to significantly lower temperatures.
East Side Church of Christ minister Don Browning spoke to about 200 Snyder High seniors, urging humility as the path to happiness. He cited Jesus words on the poor in spirit and stressed placing God first, with music by the A Cappella Choir and involvement of school leaders. Representatives from the Scurry County Boys' Club and the commissioners discussed expenses for a temporary headquarters after a December fire destroyed the county building. The club uses a former bowling alley on Twenty-fifth Street. the county park department may lease the current site for interim use while fundraising for a new club building continues.
The US Defense Department investigates a Cuban claim that gunfire from a truck at Guantanamo Bay killed a Cuban sentry named Luis Ramirez Lopez. The Cuban government said American guards shouted taunts as the sentry was shot.
Da Nang capitulates with some 400 rebels surrendering at the Tinh Hoi pagoda allowing Premier Ky to secure control of the city after eight days of fighting. U.S. forces extend curfew and monitor Buddhist protests amid ongoing operations against Viet Cong and allied forces nearby.
Pasadena based AP report says a monkey will be orbited for 30 days in mid-1967 aboard a 1,200 pound biosatellite with a 15 pound monkey to study weightlessness effects on bone and muscle. The mission will launch from Cape Kennedy after smaller flights carry insects rats and plants.
Sgt. Donald T. Deere of Snyder counted among the Green Berets is officially listed as missing in action in Viet Nam after his bunker on a French rubber plantation near Lac Ninh was attacked by Viet Cong. His mother, Mrs. Herman L. Deere of Snyder, was notified in person by Army officers, with a telegram from the Secretary of the Army confirming the notice. Deere previously served with the Snyder National Guard unit and earned the Presidential Unit Citation during three overseas tours including Okinawa, Formosa, and Viet Nam. His brother Sp-4 Charles R. Deere serves nearby in Viet Nam.
A state of emergency is proclaimed in Britain to keep essential supplies flowing as the 65,000 member National Union of Seamen strikes. Queen Elizabeth II signed the proclamation authorizing price ceilings on food and powers to seize private transport and move ships with the armed forces. The 40 hour work week demand and a 17 percent overtime wage increase drive the dispute, with basic pay at $42 weekly.
Snyder to extreme southwest Texas inputs show high temperatures from 76 to 105 and lows from 38 to 75 across North Central to Extreme Southwest Texas. Forecasts call for partly cloudy days, scattered thunderstorms mainly east and south, increasing coolness tonight and Tuesday, with warmer east and cooler northwest patterns.
West German Chancellor Ludwig Erhard arrived in London for two days of meetings with Prime Minister Harold Wilson, aiming to discuss postwar economic and political cooperation.
Joe Arthur Phillips, Frank Barnett, and others fled from Scurry County jail Thursday. James W. Oliver, a 23 year old ex Colorado City resident, hid in an attic before surrendering Friday. Oliver faced armed robbery charges. Phillips and Barnett were not deemed dangerous. Sheriff Keith Collier praised public cooperation after a large search with 38 patrol units.
