The SDN Column notes plans to install town music in Snyder with local merchants funding the effort through the Chamber of Commerce Merchant's Committee. An order is likely soon as area merchants respond to the financing proposal to enhance shopper atmosphere.
On May 21 various historical notes include the 1956 hydrogen bomb test at Bikini Atoll, De Soto's death in 1540, Grant’s 1868 nomination, Barton founding the Red Cross in 1881, Lindbergh’s Paris flight in 1927, Foochow landing in 1942, Truman Alaska statehood push in 1948, a 2008-era train derailment in India, Alabama desegregation order, and Greece’s King Constantine announcing a son’s birth.
The forecast covers Snyder Northwest Northeast Upper Coast and Central Texas. Monday highs reach 65 to 78 with lows 44 to 64, cloudy showers and isolated thunderstorms, and warmer conditions by Wednesday across north central and south parts. Winds 8 to 18 knots along the coast.
Four US headquarters in the Hue area faced a coordinated assault with 500 mortar rounds and 1% pound rockets. At least eight US soldiers and 21 enemy were killed, with 51 Americans wounded. Viet Cong struck provincial capitals and allied airfields, raising casualties as Gen Westmoreland notes increasing intensity and hints at timing with peace talks.
Funeral services are planned for Wednesday afternoon for Tommy Frank Forrest 48 of Dermott killed in a two-vehicle crash eleven miles east of Aspermont on U S Highway 380. Also killed was Douglas McWhirt 48 of Justiceburg. Forrest born May 18 1920 was a WWII veteran married to Lee Cox. Burial at Hillside Memorial Garden.
A fire broke out on the 5,000 ton Norwegian vessel Blenheim, prompting 98 passengers and most of the 80 crew to abandon ship in the North Sea. One passenger was injured as tugs and a rescue armada, including two Danish trawlers, aided 65 passengers to Esbjerg.
Royce Edward Curry of Canton Texas pleaded guilty in federal court to assaulting two FBI agents. Judge Alfred Arras ordered mental treatment and supervision during an indefinite prison term. Curry was arrested in a Denver coffee house on bond jumping and interstate transportation of a stolen car.
Paris reported a cabinet amnesty for students charged in street violence during the strike crisis, pardoning all but theft for Feb 1 to May 15. Pompidou’s government faced a censure vote as six million workers remained on strike, shutting trains, factories, and services across France.
Thunderstorms swept West Texas and the Panhandle causing jitters and heavy rain. Hail up to golf ball size fell near Dougherty and large hail reported northwest of Lubbock near Shallowater. No major damage reported early today as warnings persisted across multiple counties and recapping forecasts called for more storms tonight and Wednesday.
Indonesian officials say a two month old plot to assassinate President Suharto and 19 top officials during prayers at Merdeka Palace mosque was foiled. Seven men allegedly led the plan. several conspirators were arrested, with others still at large. An army captain and soldiers were detained. some newsmen were also picked up.
In Houston AP report Braniff Airways faces a $207,500 damage suit filed Monday by the husband and two sons of Mrs. Forest Hawkins of Corpus Christi. Hawkins, 37, was among 85 killed when the May 3 passenger plane crashed near Dawson.
In Paris and elsewhere diplomats see Britain France and the Soviet Union taking roles in Vietnam peace efforts. Harriman and Thuy planned courtesy calls on de Gaulle while Stewart heads to Moscow to coordinate with Gromyko as Hanoi leans more on the Soviets amid China's upheaval.
