Gold rose to $42 an ounce in London fixing the highest since the market opened under the two tier system. The pound rebounded from a Friday low while the franc weakened to 11.7975 francs per pound, reflecting tensions in Europe as dealers cited franc troubles drawing heat away from Britain.

US left Cuba occupation in 1902. 1943 treaty ends extraterritorial rights in China. JFK spoke on medicare in 1962. Brunswick collision killed 12 in 1968. Turkish government crushed a rebellion in 1973. U Thant warned of Middle East danger in 1969.
Snyder reports show Saturday highs near 70 and Sundays near 79 with 7 am readings around 49. Forecasts across Northwest Central and Northeast Texas call for clear to partly cloudy skies, warmer conditions, and chances of isolated thundershowers Tuesday. Coastal and southern areas expect mild nights, highs from the upper 70s to 90s, and scattered showers mainly south and along the coast.
Strikes paralyze France as workers from coal mines to auto plants walk out demanding President Charles de Gaulle resign. Paris stalls with no buses trains or subways and garbage piles up. Government plants occupy and ports halt while power stays on in some factories.
US Marines repulsed three ground assaults along the northern frontier near Khe Sanh and Con Thien. In heavy fighting 127 North Vietnamese soldiers were killed and 58 captured, while 12 Marines died and 49 were wounded. Rockets damaged Camp Evans headquarters and fuel stores, with heavy ammo destruction delaying operations.
Eager volunteers worked late into the night as Resurrection City in West Potomac Park nearly doubled in size, housing over half of the projected 3,000 residents. Leaders including Rev. Ralph David Abernathy and Rev. Andrew Young planned strategy meetings to decide when and where to demonstrate, with rain delaying a Capitol march.
Gov. Agnew moved about 800 National Guardsmen into Salisbury to curb Negro rioting after the fatal shooting of a burglary suspect by a white officer. Troopers joined the force, curfew lifted at 7 am, businesses and schools reopened, and traffic returned to normal with light damage from a night of unrest.
Funeral service for Annie May Wemken, 61, is set for 3 p.m. Tuesday at Central Baptist Church Hermleigh. She died Sunday in a Mexia hospital. Burial will be in Hermleigh Cemetery under Bell Seale Funeral Home. Survived by four sisters and a brother. Born April 28, 1907 in Lone Wolf Community.
Washington officials Harriman and Vance urged the South Vietnamese to share their view as negotiations in Paris entered a second week. They indicated the US seeks a peace outcome over propaganda while warning the gap with North Vietnam could still cause talks to fail, with long range exchanges continuing.
A local delegation will attend a House Education Committee hearing on vocational and technical education in Lamesa. Rep George Hinson chairs the committee and says further hearings will be held in other regions. The Snyder delegation including junior college, industrial development, and merchants committee members will join the 9 36 am session at the First Presbyterian Church.
Czechoslovak leader Josef Smrkovsky says discussions with Soviet Premier Kosygin are gradually easing fears about liberalization and should continue, though not all is satisfactory. He stresses need for good Soviet ties to safeguard state independence and the Warsaw Pact. Kosygin visits a Bohemian spa for rest and further talks follow. Pravda flags positive signs but warns against moves to erode the Czech Communist Party’s role.
A demonstration of the Evelyn Wood Reading Dynamics course will be held tonight at 7 30 pm at the Snyder Savings and Loan Association building. The Snyder Chamber of Commerce sponsors the course set to begin June 3 with registration at the city hall chamber office. Tuition is 175 dollars and promises to triple reading speed if all sessions and homework are completed.
