Merkel Man Dies In Mishap At Airport
A 42 year old Merkel man Billy Dale Pitt died when his home made gyro copter crashed at Winston field about 75 feet up. The experimental craft nosed down near the north end of the runway after a propeller problem. Pitt, licensed pilot, had flown the machine before. The craft owned by Blackie Miears of Snyder. FAA investigators and a Civil Aeronautics Board rep, from Lubbock and Ft Worth, investigated the crash which occurred at 4 10 pm and Pitt was taken to Cogdell Hospital where he died. Mrs Pitt was treated for shock and the family plans funeral services at Starbuck Funeral Home.

Lightning Destroys Lone Star District School
A lightning strike and fire destroyed the Lone Star Consolidated District common school near Centerville Texas. Built in 1942 with WPA labor, the stone structure cost the Leon County district about $90,000. replacement estimated at $500,000 to $600,000.
